Like many others, My company recently went through lay offs. The HR team was affected more than others. Now, months later , the remainder of the team is being asked to write their job descriptions for next year and have been told in no uncertain terms, next year, our positions will be very different. My gut is telling me that we all need to be concerned and the company is asking us to prove our worth. Am I paranoid?

Definitely not paranoid. My company is in the same boat and allegedly waiting for funding to see if we can survive or will go bankrupt. Sounds like they are trying to re-org to potentially sale the company.

Not paranoid. Companies are streamlining. HR is a cost center and is often the one targeted in the first round of cost-savings. This is especially true with all the advancements in technology and, I hate to say, AI.

Be as specific as possible, and list every single thing that you do, even if only sporadically or even annually. Always include anything process or system that you manage. Knowledge is key.

Not paranoid at all. The new expectation is that everyone does more to maximize productivity. Basically, no specialty HR departments, but overall generalists that can do anything from employee relations, talent acquisition, payroll, benefits, FMLA, compensation, training, coaching, talent management, total rewards, onboarding, performance evaluations, VOEs…to name a few. The list goes on and on and on!

like

Not paranoid. Use it as a chance to think strategically. What direction is the company going? What will be their most critical HR needs? How can your role adapt to support them?

You are not at all paranoid and I think that you should always follow your gut. If it is telling you that you might have something to worry about then I would start looking for something else. It is taking a lot longer than normal to get hired so if you start looking now you may be able to secure something sooner rather than later.

First time poster here!

After spending 4 years as a mid-level ops manager, I tried to break into HR through talent acquisition. Now after 6 years in TA, I've had a hard time getting out of it. My goal was always to get into a more broad HRBP position, but I've since worked for smaller orgs without a solid HR career path. When I ask about my career goals, they keep telling me, "Soon!" Or "Maybe in 6 months!"

I'm testing SPHR in June. Any advice for securing the type of role I'm aiming for?

SPHR exam- has anyone ever been “randomly selected” for an application audit? This just happened to me and the sheer amount of effort that is going to go into collecting all the documents almost makes me not want to follow through. Since I didn’t finish undergrad, they’re asking for a copy of my high school diploma or transcript and that itself is going to be an absolute nightmare to get hold of. Guess I’m not really looking for a solution here, just venting.

I am looking to make a career change to HR. I currently make 75K as a sales and development coach. I had a recent offer for a state government position in a talent acquisition role but I’d be taking a $25K pay cut. I am extremely over qualified for the position but it could possibly be a stepping stone and gives me the time to acquire SHRM certifications and possibly start taking classes to get my MBA. My question is those currently in an HR role, would this move make sense to you?

Any thoughts on the best certifications to get in order to help move forward? I have considered the CCP from World at Work, but it’s fairly pricey to get by the time you wrap up everything. I was looking at both SHRM-CP and SPHR. Everyone that I have spoken to has the SHRM, but that’s also only looking at individuals in a small geographic footprint and within 3-4 different companies. I was hoping to get some thoughts on this from others? Thanks

Is this legal? My spouses company just decided to change their comp structure for account managers. It was base + comm, now it’s commission only but nothing changed, OT commission is the same, didn’t get more points, just took away the base pay and said work harder basically. So now they have to worker harder to get $50k they were already making. (Not a decision based on employee performance, they’ve been crushing it. I think the company is just trying to save money they overspent else where)

Is there any resources someone can point me to about the potential legal issues and more information from an HR perspective about contingent employees (temps, contract workers, part-time workers) versus normal FTE’s?

I’m working on a project for an HR class and finding good sources with real evidence about this from SHRM and news publications has been rough. Thanks!
