Looking at possibly starting to work towards getting my CPA license and/or transitioning to public accounting. Currently working in a smaller/mid sized Non-profit as an accounting analyst/lead accountant. Currently have 10+ years in various industries including in municipal government in Ontario, Canada as well as some bookkeeping experience. Wondering if it is worth getting my CPA (the cost is a factor that I doubt my current employer will help with).

Better late than never to take control of your career. I couldn’t imagine having 10+ years of work experience and not being able to afford the exams. Unless you also meant that you need to go back to school too. Definitely try to get out of nfp if money is a motivator. Getting your CPA may or may not help you with your next role but it should help you in the long run. Obviously, results depend on your ambitions.

Have you considered getting your CMA? Unless you are going into tax, a CMA may be a great option. I am not too familiar with the track for it because I am on CPA path, but I have heard it is a career door opener like CPA, but for industry accounting.

likehelpful

The CMA hasn’t existed in Canada for almost 10 years. It’s not an option anymore

There are other certificates related to accounting. Unless you're about to go work in audit or tax in a public accounting firm, you don't need to waste the time and money on a CPA.

I'm a CPA, and I know the time commitment is not for everybody. My mom works in city government and she's getting her CMFO.

likefunny

This! I am trying to go back to Tax for the same reason. I have my CPA; did Tax in the past and want to go back because I need CPA + PA experience to get my CPA license to actually work in my favor.

Decide what you want to do long term first and then decide on which credential is necessary for that path. As others have indicated, there are other accounting designations besides CPA that may be relevant depending on your goal. If you do not have the college credit hours for the CPA that is also a factor. If it’s just passing the exams, I would say go for it.

My old employer asked me if I wanted to come back to the company as a manager. The pay will likely be much better and the position holds more responsibility than I’ve had before, so overall it would be a step up. The issue is I left the company because of an abusive manager who constantly put me down and made me feel like I wasn’t doing anything right. If I come back I’d be working under her again. I’m torn because the opportunity is great but the stress was awful. Continued in comments…

International tax manager with 7 years experience all at KPMG. Thinking about switching to industry to see it from a new perspective and do similar work from a different angle. How do you successfully transfer B4 skills/experience to industry (how do you find the right fit?), and how do you continue to learn and build your skills so that you’re still marketable and could boomerang back if it doesn’t work out in a few years? Am I asking too much?
