The pays >$500k is going to be the sticking point. Not a lot of jobs offer that. Best bet is go to back to McK probably.
..and find the right opportunity that:
1. Gives me ppl mgmt
2. Pays > $500k
3. Values my skill set of - can crush at anything, no real expertise in anything
Feeling extremely lost about how to go about it, given the problem is super ended. Looking for advice on which roles and companies do partners from strategy consulting usually exit it?
I would ignore your experience at Google and frame the problem as if you were exiting McK again.
- CxO at mid cap firm (you'd have to narrow it down based on your industry and studies)
- VP at F500 firm
If the Google experience helps for a particular role, I'd highlight it otherwise keep it short and sweet
Can you still use McK 's placement help?

Thank you. And I’m not sure six years at McKinsey and one year at Google translate into a partner exit equivalent. May need to manage expectations a bit.
I see two paths
a) go back to consulting for a couple of years and find a decent exit with a client
OR
b) go to CxO at a smaller firm and work your way up
In big tech, you're an L6 - a cog, albeit a slightly bigger, in a wheel. And there is literally less than a 5% chance you'll convince another big tech to take you in at L7/Director and pay more.
Google1, appreciate your insights here. I heard the exact same thing from multiple people so I believe the narrative that its better to build up experience externally before coming into Google, but logically how can the firm prefer to hire someone external vs promoting within, for critical L7+ roles? Put another way, in this narrative, isn’t the difficulty and competitiveness of landing a L7 offer understated?

Were you coached out of partner at McKinsey? If so, you can give it a whirl at Bain/BCG or try to go DAP into a T2/B4 but that will be tough, not unheard of. Otherwise, going back to McKinsey and making a run at it might be the best option.

The reality is there simply are not a lot of $500k+ jobs. The reason so many of us put up with the consulting grind is that it’s one of the very few reasonably high probability ways to make this kind of money. Your chances of finding a job that pays that much in another industry, given your background, is pretty slim.
What kind of work do you do at Google? What parts of it you enjoy and what parts you do not and why?
What kind of work do you think you will find challenging? I'm so sorry that has been your experience at Google. It would be great if they offered better opportunities for growth.

Hello OP, what was the TC offered to you when you joined Google?
