Solid candidate, not spectacular given white male plus 700 gmat. You cant change the former; I’d blanket all 7, really put the effort into the application and interviews.
OP said in another comment he is LGBT, so he's in the clear
Think about it like this... 700 GMAT check to check minus, 3.8 GPA check plus, 720-740 gets you a check. Every part of your application is essentially scored and you need to punch above the prospective class (which obviously varies by school) to be highly competitive vs. just competitive where it a lot of times can come down to luck (which is why you would want to apply round one where there’s more spots avail and less people like you already accepted). 20 points on your gmat helps but it’s really not going to be THE deciding factor
This is spot on. I honestly think the interview and essays will be the deciding factor given OP's profile.
GMAT too low for a white male B4 consultant.
Yours truly,
Another white male B4 consultant with a low GMAT
Your application won't be ignored. Your essays and interviews will be the deciding factor in this case.
Hard to handicap. That’s an above average GPA, below average GMAT, and the rest doesn’t convey a lot of info. If you blanketed the M7, I wouldn’t be surprised if you ended up at one
Agreed with the above - good (but far from superior) profile. It will depend on actual work experience within strategy, including promotions, and require strong execution (story, interview, recs). You’re in the hunt.
Thanks all. Wonder if I improve my GMAT to ~720 if that would put my in a safer position or if it’s not worth the trouble
Getting a better score on a standardized test always helps. Now, will it drastically improve your chances of getting in? You move from 89th percentile to 94th percentile (based on 2018 scores). So I'm going to say yes.
740 for me would change it from “solid candidate” to “virtual lock as long as you dont flunk the interview.” Really a question for an admission officer to answer with more certainty though.
It’s a solid profile. Tell a clear and compelling story: Where are you going? Where have you been? How is an MBA from <insert M7> a logical and necessary step from from your past to your future?
C2 - a lot of us have recently been through the mba process. It’s important to estimate approximately where you rank so you arent throwing apps to say 50 schools.
Um isn’t that what class profiles are for? Most give ranges for gpa and test scores
Why don’t you just apply and find out vs asking randos who *most likely* are just speculating along with you?
Yeah I still disagree with you. Not sure why this is such a sensitive subject for you, you can always look past a post if you don’t agree with it
Wish I could come close to that lol. You’ll 100% get into one but you won’t get into all so hopefully you are good with moving
Like others have said, at this point it will be up to your story and interviews. I have identical stats/WE and was waitlisted at 3 of the M7s. But I did get into a top 15 with a large scholarship - all that to say that the stats will get you an opportunity then it's up to you to execute.
On the border. Make sure you have great reasons for why you want an MBA, your career choice after, and the specific school. That’s key!
Chances from MBB would be high, because usually those folks are already two years into a very interesting second job or a pre-Mba promotion by the time they apply. Regardless, MBB on its own probably gets you into Booth, Kellogg, Columbia and MIT
Have someone who is an alumni of M7 at your current firm introduce you to a M7 Professor and put in a good word for you. Further strengthen the relationship with that business school professor through email exchanges on interesting topics. Have him/her vouch for you on application and make a mention on school essay. That is a sure shot lock.
Get a waiver on the GMAT based on work experience. It’s a BS test and shouldn’t be used anyway.
Lower scores are often a mix of the following: The folks that don’t need scholarships / come from non-technical backgrounds (education, gov’t, non-profit) / legacy and donor families / historically underrepresented populations / interesting stories (retired athletes, artists, those that have been impacted by natural disasters)
The schools “curate” a class. Test scores are just one lever to pull.
