My father was a traveling consultant for 25 years. Barely know him. He was laid off 5 years ago. Alcoholism, depression, the works. Terrified to follow in his footsteps. Needed to vent.

You are not your father, be open for the fact you may have some of the same risks and actively mitigate them, but you are not him. You are not destined to go down the same path, you are you.

That being said, hope he recovers soon and gets the love from his family he needs.

This. I find people who are actively aware they don’t want to be one of their parents usually don’t end up like them (however they may accidentally end up like the other parent or with other issues of their own that come from rebelling/avoiding being like the parent.) Basically, it’s not the issue you see that you should worry about, it’s the ones you don’t see. I think it’s very unlikely you will become your dad with your awareness.

You don't have to. I first few years on the job I used to drink and be stressed. In recent years I cleaned my act: minimized drinking to social events only, go to the hotel gym every day, eat healthy, and work late hours while travel.
Weekends are 100% for my wife and kids. No interruptions! No work!
I go back from the weekend refreshed, take care of my clients so sales are great. I also use every bit of PTO I got. 4 times a year we do 10 days vacations as a family.

Takes discipline, but you can have healthy life in consulting

My mother was also a traveling consultant for 35+ years. She recently retired after a great career. Also she and I are incredibly close and I talk to her about almost everything.

I’m sorry for what you and your father have and are going through but do know it isn’t always that way.

Thank you for sharing. I do need to realize that just because my father’s situation is this way doesn’t mean every one has to be.

I think you should try to connect with your dad. I wish I could. I barely knew mine and literally don’t have his phone number.

like

EY1, can you send your dad a one line note thanking him for the tuition and saying you are doing well? He may not know how to reach out either.

What made you get into consulting even after seeing all these?

like

You can always start taking remote projects; drinking is always an option, but no one is holding a gun to your head. I prefer to workout and eat healthy and compete in athletic events, this prevents me from drinking too much because I know how my body will feel, and I know waking up early for a run will suck if I get to twisted. Also competing allows me to get a healthy adrenaline boost and to get rid of unwanted anxiety. Think about long term too and what you want with your life. If you feel you really need to drink/abuse drugs you should maybe think about seeing a therapist. There is no shame in that, also idk where you live but CBD is legal here in the US and it helps people calm down after a stressful day. You can do anything you set your mind too, just ask for help people are always willing to help at accenture! Good luck friend, and happy holidays!

People hide in all sorts of jobs, not just consulting. I just finished dating an IB who was soulless. Traveled less than we do, worked more. What I learned? It’s not the career that predestines disassociation. If you want to be disconnected, there are a million easy excuses centered around work from which to pull. So it’s not the job, OP, it’s how you decide to do it.

like

Sounds like your Father's firm didnt care for people's well being or loyalty. Firms now a days pretend to care more while doing less. We are on our own and have to make our own mistakes. Life often gives you shitty years, and splendid years. Hopefully, your crappy years will come when you have the necessary support structure. Take care of your father, you can be present for him even though he may not have been for you.

How are you feeling right now? What made you think of this?

NDAs - signed my first one as a part of a severance agreement. thinking about leaving an honest review for this company, but unsure about the liabilities that come with this. (NDA mentioned no defamation) leaning on the side of letting it go, but this employer sucked BAD and i want others to know. ik its hard to give a straight answer bc it depends on the agreement, but wheres the line between bad mouthing vs your honest experience?

Question about inclusion…. I’ve been teaching inclusion for 5 years so I’m still a newb, but a first year coworker of mine said she got points off on her observation because her kids were scattered in the classroom and she was having to move from kid to kid to assist. While I see the point of putting them together for convenience, I don’t agree with this at all! To me this is like singling them out by putting them all together instead of INCLUDED amongst peers. What do y’all think?

It’s hard to be motivated when rounds of layoffs happen and you see all your friends leave. But one thing that’s gotten me through all of this is working out. And when I say workout I mean the most pathetic, sad, barely completed beginner-level cardio dance routines. I’ve somehow forced myself to move while on lockdown and it’s somehow forced me to feel better. Whatever you’re doing, wherever you are: get up and move even if you don’t finish or end up going on a walk. Pls take care of yourself❤️

I had a baby almost a year ago. I should start a 529 account for my child but I am originally from France which also makes her a French citizen and she could easily go to college in France for not much money. It’s pretty much free there, I have 0 Student loan debt. With that in mind, a 529 would not be super helpful if we go that route. Should I consider other options? Do you have suggestions? Thanks so much!

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
