Need tax advice.. my wife has found a remote job with a company based out of California, has offices in other states as well, but will work 100% out of Virginia.. so does she have to pay tax to California , Virginia or both?

Assuming she’s a w-2 employee then she would be taxed in Virginia only since that is where she performed services.

like

Yes w2.

Always the location you’re working in. In this case VA. If you were to wfh, then you’re taxed based on your home state

like

Convenience of employer rule in a state like NY would result in double taxation but VA would allow a credit for taxes paid. Not all states would allow a credit though. If you work in CA remotely for a NY employer, you get screwed since CA would not allow a credit.

like

It is not ‘always’ the location. NY for example is trying to implement rules that would allow them to collect income tax for employees who work remotely out of state. Look into it… very few tax things these days are ‘always’.

like

Yep. "[F]ive states that have a convenience-of-the-employer rule—Connecticut, Delaware, Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania—withholding is based on where the employer is located unless the telecommuting is required by the employer. On the other hand, if an employee works from a different location for his or her convenience but is not required to do so, those states impose income tax on the employee based on the employer’s location as well."

I started traveling while working remote and fell in love with the mountains. I’m now applying to be a full time remote employee and fear they won’t approve it.

How do I pitch that I need to live elsewhere for my happiness and not near an office?

Hello Fishes,

I currently hold offers from below:
IBM - 15.5 LPA
CTS - 18.5 LPA
PWC India - 16 LPA
Oracle Financial Services Software(OFSS) - 21 LPA

Planning to join OFSS as I will work in product development team and can work in any shift timings with WFH.

Today I had my 2nd round interview with EY GDS and got rejected.
Do I need to worry about this and feel low?
Could EY GDS would have been better instead of OFSS?

Please provide your valuable inputs.

What do you think?

Compliance question here, I have always thought of the SALT deduction on the fed return as a perm item & have treated as such in such sch M-3. I see that some people put it as a temp on sch M-3. What is the justification for treating it as a temp on the M-3. You don’t set up a deferred on the def RF for the state tax deduct & it is also a rate impacting item (I know that some temps can be rate impacting). But this all leaves me to side with perm. Does anyone know the logic behind temp treatment?

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. Through a lot of comp discussions I heard a lot of talk of “making you whole” when things get better. Am I drinking the kool-aid by believing this? Is this just meant to prevent further questions that the firm does not know the answer to?
