I coach people on this issue and it is very common. Just be authentic and be yourself. Clarify and share upfront your style with everyone even through an email. Don't let people make assumptions. Say something like: I am excited to be here. I look forward to getting to know you over time. Just to let you know that I am very shy person and it takes me time to warm up to new people. Please don't misinterpret my shyness as being uninterested, totally the opposite. I just need time. thank you
I'm shy too! Totally fine with patients but nervous around everyone else! 😂 Some of the best advice I got was to ask some light questions, like 'where do you all go after work around here?' It shows that you're interested in them and gives you control of the conversation!
Me too, I think because of the nature of our work and countless hours of studying alone we struggle with communication skills when it comes to meeting new people. One technique that works for me is actually telling the new coworkers “I’m sorry if i come across as quiet or not interactive with you guys, I’m just trying to adjust to the new job as best as i can but I promise I’m more social than this as i get more comfortable with the position”. Just explain to them what is happening to you as you adjust so you don’t come across as awkward or ant-social, but overall even if I’m quiet in nature I haven’t had any bad reputation when i meet new co-workers. Just interact as much as you can with them and a smile every now and then also helps to easy out the new environment.
