People that need validation and praise for doing things like working while sick are definitely not the people you want to align yourself with. I remember years back listening to a peer brag about working at least 12 - 16 hour days everyday and I remember thinking “aren’t you embarrassed that everyone else can do it in 8 - 9?” You’re definitely right to question and in my experience, that is not normal! We should be taking care of ourselves so we can bring our best to the work!
I remember years ago, a VP I really admired called out this type of behavior publicly. He straight up told the always busy crowd to ask their more efficient peers how to work smarter.
Their normal doesn’t have to be yours. There’s still some activities that I won’t do. If people making six figures with paid sick and vacation days choose to work while sick, that’s not your problem.
Thanks, that outlook really helps. I'm new to the team, and I can already tell that there has a completely different attitude re covid for the last few years.
As someone with autoimmune issues, I get sick regularly and try not to leave my team hanging because it happens fairly often and would hate for them to start resenting me for something outside of my control.
I wish I could rely on my team to cover for me without resentment, as I would do for them, but I’m also on a new team and haven’t figured out the culture quite yet and don’t want to start off on a bad foot.
Who brags about being sick? I mean, sure, it's great that she was able to work while she was sick, but that doesn't mean she should be proud of it.
