Know the room? Or read the room? Or do you think in this case they’re synonymous?
Than I’d define “knowing the room” as either
1) The agency didn’t do enough research beforehand to understand the clients business (most common), the knowledge/experience/positions of those in attendance, or the overall need/ask.
2) The agency took too much time discussing things that weren’t relevant to the meeting (or the people in attendance), didn’t spend enough time talking about things that were relevant, or were given a variety of other cues that weren’t noticed or ignored.
The second is truly a problem of “reading the room”, which makes me think your issue was the former.
When you say you "came across" the email do you mean you weren't on the original thread? If so, that could warrant the response. If you weren't included then "reading the room" is a way of saying "stay out of it" in most cases.
Yeah that makes sense. I was a part of the original email, but maybe I wasn’t at the level I can answer the question... still confusing lol
Was the email from client? What level are you at? Normally it wouldn’t matter. But in this case it might. For example, if the email was from client and was asking about your agency’s point of view on a topic, or was questioning something in a brief, it would look better for the answer to come from the strategy lead, rather than an AE. Having too junior a person answer a complex question can make it come across like you haven’t put enough thought into something, or the strategist isn’t giving enough attention to the account.
That example is just a guess, but could be something like that.
