I have been reading a few articles talking about how FAANG isn’t as lavish as it used to be. My first question is if that is true? If it is true, my second question is what companies out there have the pay, benefits, and perks like FAANG? My last question is if it is as difficult to get into those companies? Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: YES.
Agree agree.
Probably, but make sure you ask a lot of questions about the team. It’s relatively easier to find a job that pays more but it’s very difficult to find a good team you enjoy being on.
Ugh agree. I left a great boss and now I make more and have a truly d-level “boss” now and money isn’t even worth what I left.
Are you me
Can you ask for a raise at your current place? Really good boss is a huge plus.
You might be surprised by what’s possible. Give your boss the opportunity to explore this and work with you on a plan to get you closer to the money you need without causing any issues internally. If it doesn’t work and you decide the money is more important, then leave. You know the money is out there anyway.
Is your really good boss creating opportunities for you? Is she teaching you and making you better at your job in ways that you wouldn’t improve by virtue of experience with another agency?
It’s hard to leave a good boss - but five years is a long time in the agency world. Loyalty is very rarely rewarded. I’d try be objective about your opportunities, development, and potential for growth at your agency.
As someone who has a solid team of folks I care about, I would encourage you to take the jump and take on a new challenge. You can always keep in contact with your boss and in my experience there’s always an opportunity to come back/work with them again someday. I would respect the fact that someone on my team was expanding their career and wish them well.
Having had a similar thought process...bosses leave too. You can’t base something as serious as your career and livelihood on one person with their own goals and ambitions.
Yes. Low pay, blah agency = LEAVE
Good CDs want to see their people grow. If that’s not gonna happen where you’re at now, they’ll have no problems wishing you well wherever you choose to go next.
What else are you getting besides money?
It's all about the boss. Stick with him and tell him your thoughts. Maybe pitch it that you want more responsibility/money. At the very least he will see you as a baller who he will recommend to friends or bring you in at his next agency. Her/his, whatever...you get it it.
It’s really hard to beat really good boss IMO. If there are opportunities for advancement there, if salary potential is what you’d want, good boss is not nothin...
Yes. Go. All bosses will understand.
5 years and still a copywriter? Either leave or get your I need a promotion hat on.
2 years junior, 3 years mid level seems normal.
I’m in this position, but 2 years in. Don’t want to get locked in and forsake my opportunities elsewhere
Time to say Bye Bye Bye.
Yes.
Yes, time to grow and get paid a whole lot more for your years of experience.
Thanks Fishbowl. Lots of good advice here.
