Roth IRA contributions will sit in a money market fund until you manually invest them. 401k funds you select your portfolio when you start with the firm and then upon each paycheck a that breakdown is contributed to that portfolio.
Pro
Roth IRA - yes you have to manually select and invest. It basically work like a brokerage account, but with no wash sales, taxes, no margin, and limited options trading.
401k - depends on your company. Most will default to a target date funds based on your birth year. You should check your investment elections yourself however. Some of those target date funds have high fees and low returns (too conservative).
Company 401k will most likely put you in a target fund based on your age. Most companies provide like 25-40 options though. Your Roth IRA, you will need to choose where that money is invested. Just dump it all in a total stock market index fund (vtsax, FKSAX) unless you’re abt to retire.
Not sure about TD, but I know with Fidelity you can set up automatic investments in your Roth IRA.
Every month/quarter, Fidelity will withdraw $$ from your specified bank account, and then invest $$ in the mutual fund(s)* of your choice.
* This option only works with mutual funds, not individual stocks/ETFs.
