I love this story! I paid my way and was the first in my family to graduate too! Such a great feeling of accomplishment.
I would suggest that you consider what you can afford and want to give to help her get on her feet then make it a a one time gift.
She will be grateful for anything and you won’t be obligated to continue paying perhaps more than anticipated.
This is a good idea too!
All on her own just like I did. Her mom and dad did not help and she came from a poverty situation like I did. This is now her senior year of college. I would like to approach her, in honor of my dad and her grandfather who is now passed and pay back her student loans. Is there any advice you would give to this scenario? Should she also pay back some or should just tell her to get on her feet? I’m guessing she may go to grad school.
I think the maximum gift is about $16,000 without having to pay taxes
Aww. That is so sweet. A story like this really inspires me :)
Talk to your niece first. Let her know that you're thinking of paying off her student loans and see how she feels about it. She may be grateful for the offer, but she may also feel like she needs to pay them off herself.
Explain your reasons. Tell her why you want to pay off her student loans. Explain that you're doing it in honor of your dad and her grandfather, and that you're proud of her for all her hard work.
My parents paid for my education, and it wasn't because they had a ton of money, they just really wanted me to succeed. I could tell that was the difference; I didn't feel spoiled, and I knew that they were making an effort and that they also expected something of me. They also believed in my passion for history and allowed me to major in it, so there were no strings attached. I love my job and I affect a lot of kids lives. So I think they'd be proud of me now.
