I would not. Regardless of sobriety huge stigma in our society around alcoholics
He wouldn't be disclosing that he's an alcoholic just that he has a disability that could be anything.
I advise against disclosing alcoholism. If you have another underlying disorder that’s been diagnosed that has less stigma (like Tourette’s or something) that might be worth considering. Employers are looking to see if you will be a fit with them. My belief is alcoholism would work against you because too many people out there don’t understand it. It’s a belief though, not a fact.
It’s not bizarre if you are hard up to support yourself / your family financially and the job market / application process is tearing your spirit to shreds. I’ve been there.

It's still a disability. You're sober now, but like depression or other mental health disorders that are considered disabilities, there are ups and downs. It still has the power to impact your life and make some days more difficult.
I usually don't check it, or if I do I mention I have epilepsy in interviews (need to disclose anyways for safety if there's a fire alarm or something and it's not a condition people fear will effect work performance). That's worked the company gets the DEI points without fear of work performance issues.

As a prior applicant, the firms usually don’t ask you to disclose WHAT your disability is, or if it’s current vs prior. As a hiring manager, I NEVER see if these boxes are checked.
Wouldn’t they eventually ask though? I mean if you say you have a disability one would think that HR would need to at minimum understand what it is so they can make any necessary accommodations?
I have never been asked what the disability is, when I checked the box. If you need accommodations you reach out to HR for them after being hired HR doesn't reach out to you to ask.
This is fascinating. If they don’t ask, or better if they are prohibited by law from asking, just check the box to get your skin in the game and if it ever comes up now or later one could just plead ignorance, maybe I checked the box by mistake 😉
So what’s the consensus, that checking the box (given you’re a qualified candidate) hurts or helps?

While the company wants to be diverse, there's still a chance your application might be judged differently if you check the box,even if it's unintentional.
