Hi everyone,
I have a total 9+ work ex in Devops and Release Management. Did an executive mba with a goal of breaking into Program management but got recruited into Management Consulting . In this company for the past 3 months.
I feel that my overall skills are better off in a TPM/Program Management role.
My overall experience makes me eligible for most PM roles.
My question is how do I prep for a TPM role since I don’t have development or Scrum Master exposure. Amazon India VMware BrowserStack Inc.

I’ve been a VP twice over the course of a 10 year span. The first time my previous title was Senior Strategist and I went to VP/Director
This time my title prior was Group Strategy Director.
Honestly in a VP role you spend a lot of time managing people and politics. It’s much less about being a practitioner.
I hate the politics but I’ve gotten better at them. 10 years ago I was in a big agency with tons of politics and passive aggressiveness, which is tiring.
If you really like the hands on work I’m not sure you’d like the VP job. I enjoy hands on but I really like mentoring and I’m good at it. There’s also a heavy admin component. Lots of resourcing meetings.
I get to be our CSO’s right hand which I enjoy. I basically do all of the day to day running of things.
Mentor
Depends on where (my full title is SVP, managing director).
In some places it’s not really a meaningful title - you’re just an SD.
At other places it means you’re the head of the department in your location with the ability to sign big contracts and hire and fire as you please.
Overseeing vs doing: depends on the new business tilt of the agency.
Thanks for this. I've worked with VPs across the manager/ practitioner spectrum too. A long list of characters, now that I think about it. Plenty of Australian accents along the way. My favorite ones were a good mix of both. I would want to have that balance myself. Maybe aim for VP at a scrappier spot and build manager skill there...
