Just did this..switched from ICT to skilled worker..I would advice you to wait atleast till you get the CoS assigned and the application done..I only got a biometric after a month of booking the application so had to resign before the biometric appointment. But had no issues and my visa is approved now (was done in priority, otherwise it takes 8 weeks to get a decision). If you have a longer notice period you wouldn't have an option to wait...plan your CoS start date such that you would be ending your notice period before your CoS start date ideally..
I’d done this, Deloitte had specified clearly not to resign before the BRP is issued (considering my notice period was 8 weeks) - they were okay with that. I’d wait for everything to be sorted before resigning

@A1: It wad pretty smooth. PwC took care of it and ACN paid for it. Just need to submit documents and sit tight. Keep on top of PwC tho and ask for updates, sometimes they just stall without letting you know.
@A OP: Normally they hold of on contacting the current firm until you've resigned. It's very difficult to fail background checks unless you've outright lied, so it's not really an issue. They contacted ACN straightaway and I presume waited until I resigned at D. Also I hope you didn't pay for the visa at ACN, they used to take care of it.
I’ve just done this. I resigned immediately but had a six month notice period as a buffer (although only taking 3 months). Be aware that changing sponsors is the same as getting a new visa and you will have to have an in person interview for biometrics.
Interview slots are really full up—I was lucky as someone has a last minute cancellation that my firm was able to snag for me. Also paid to have my decision made within 24 hours.
Would recommend talking to your new firm’s immigration team/provider about timelines. In any case they need to move quickly on getting your application in.

Thanks, this was helpful
I am on a visa and come close to resigning but my distrust/ experience with visa issues meant (and still means) I will resign once Visa is approved.
However, I have a shorter than usual notice period and I am quite risk averse
I know a colleague who resigned after the visa was filed

Quick question. Did you have to travel back to home country to apply for the switch?
Nope..you can apply within UK..
