She is right. It will save your year. You are headed into a difficult part of year. Get to know you, policies, procedures, and expectations. Build that community.
Good advice. Tbh, they will remember more if they like you. I have kids that hate math and might even be failing but attempt to do the work just because they like me as a person. Although the curriculum is important, I've noticed that even my smart kids aren't going to remember it the next year so definitely building relationship and showing them how to learn and work together.
That is really good advice. By team-building and get to know you activities, you will connect with the students. Then when you need to push them faster than they think they can go, they will live up to your expectations. Without it, they will fight you every step of the way. Also keep in mind that starting mid year, YOU are behind. You are re-establishing a classroom that the students have already been a part of, already created a culture with, so you need to establish that this is a NEW class, YOUR class. Jumping into the curriculum before that will allow the students to cling to a class that just isn't anymore, and can potentially create problems down the road.
yea Team building and RULES RULES RULES! Balance those two things with some review activities from the first half of the year and I promise you will teachmore over the semester then if you just started teaching lessons
Oh it's so worth it. Have you planned your routines, etc? Spent anytime in your room?
Good luck. You got this! What subjects?
