I prefer making them speak a number first. In this case, lack of response = desire to lowball. Not a you problem, a them and their budget problem.
Agreed
This game sickens me however it must be played. Usually it’s better to give a range at the interview and then negotiate specific numbers when you have an offer in hand. There are no hard and fast rules however.
Sounds like they underestimated you. Wait for a reply but I would start looking for another opportunity
I try not to read into it too much one way or the other. At the end of the day you have to ask for what you deserve and it sounds like you did your research. If it is the right role it will pay you what you deserve.
Depending on the organization, the skills needed, and area market. They have a budget, they may or may not be able to change the amount. If your number is real and accurate they may not be willing to pay the going rate. As long as youre realistic about what you are worth then there isnt much you can do. I've been able to get them to relevel jobs for me based on the ask, but you have to be able to provide strong value to get that. If you can get them to tell you the budget in the interview thats helpful, but some companies will not.
Hope it works out.
