Advice needed - boyfriend has almost 3.5 years of finance experience at a bank. Interviewed for PwC valuation senior associate and now recruiter says they want to hire him at “experienced associate” because he has no valuation experience. Is this too big of a step backwards in career? Should he push back and see if it gets him anywhere? If he does accept Associate, is it reasonable to ask for written, definitive timeline (1 year?) for promo to Senior upon meeting standards? Help!

It also allows companies to tap into talent nationally (or in some cases internationally) rather than being limited to a 50-mile radius…
You're making claims without providing any evidence. Just googling work from home studies shows me a bunch of results from the past few years and they seem pretty split on whether it's a net positive or negative. Almost like it depends on many factors including the person, the job, the company, the culture, etc. Even the way you phrase it: "not always" and "in many cases" implies that there are plenty of examples that go against your opinion.
I read one article the other day that suggested the exact opposite of your claim, that the increased flexibility made people feel more supportive of their company and more likely to stay on and be productive.
I'm not going to pretend there's one correct answer, but I am going to suggest that perhaps your company hasn't figured out how to manage a remote workforce efficiently.
WFH only works with people who have actual in office experience. I personally think people should “work” wherever and whenever they work best but need to show up in person for social activities and training.
Rising Star
Likewise, I’ve seen many managers who should have no business managing people given their attitude that what they think is always correct.
Perhaps be a better manager? I have no issues with my team wfh.
As someone who is neurodivergent I will never again work for a company that would make me come into an office for work daily. Offices are an ND nightmare while at home I can control all the stimuli around me.
So true! I cannot function day to day in the office and be productive but I’m insanely productive when I can also juggle my kids, cooking dinner, laundry, and my job all at the same time. 😂 I think the personal relationships are soooooo important though to even just being a decent person which is why social events and training still need to be in person.
Honestly, without forced engagement in a classroom setting, training is a total waste of time for me. I also think that unless we know and care about our colleagues, there can never be career satisfaction.
You mean employees should have more loyalty than a firm does when things go sour? About that….
I work in PA and almost every engagement I’ve worked on had team members spread out (such as I was working for an office in another city) or I had seniors/directors that worked from home. It makes zero sense to come into a freezing office just to call someone on Teams. I can do that from my house.
Depends on a person’s situation. If there are a lot of distractions at home, then the person is probably not very productive. Offices can also have a lot of distractions and result in lost productivity. Another factor to consider is commute time.
For many WFH offers more flexibility, higher productivity, better ability to focus, but can also lead to working longer days as it can be hard to break away and draw the line when to end the day.
We have fully remote teams where certain members opt to go into the office every day for a variety of reasons, again it is situational. Members are also required to be in the office for certain meetings, events or trainings.
There's peaks and valleys for many people working in accounting. Being able to WFH is particularly great for when there's down time.
I like that CLA gives us a pretty desk, nice view and complete flexibility about what hours we work and when we come into the office. It’s gives responsible and intelligent people a reward for their ability to manage their life.
Seeing a lot of WFH people ditch day care and not getting their work done. Too many people take advantage. I don’t believe productivity is higher for everyone- some yes but most no. We are in an environment where you learn a lot on the job. People who don’t work w their teams lose out on a lot of skill sets. A couple of years out of Covid it is starting to show how far behind full wfh people are. I’m all for hybrid but the 100% wfh people need to realize they are not as marketable anymore and will be way behind their peers that are in At least part of the week.
Yeah, this is just a bunch of your nonsense opinion being bundled as the way things are....."most" wfh people take advantage and don't actually work, according to you. I'd love to see those statistics, and sorry, "it's what I see" won't cut it because, frankly, you sound like a nightmare to work for.
All depends on the person. The firm gets more time out of me because I'm not spending 2 hours in traffic everyday :)
Make inoffice people work only 35 to compensate for commute then they might come in 😉
Lowering it to 35 hours a week wouldn’t cover my travel time.
You're right, I don't want to be required to go into the office. I'm way more productive at home so I don't see what it matters. I train my peers and lower levels, I lead both team and national initiatives, and I take pride in my work but if I have days where I want to nap during lunch, then it's my prerogative. I wouldn't go back into any office unless there was a substantial pay increase because my time is money just as much as my employer. It's a trade off and if you don't like it, then don't work for a place that allows it. You can't handle that other people are happy working from home, then you are more than welcome to stay at your office.
I have worked decades in office and have always preferred working in office. Since Covid, i would absolutely never go back to working for a company that requires in office.
WFH and away from the corporate politics, socializing and conversations at unproductive meetings is an overall positive. The tream is happier, personal life style and overall health has improved significantly since Covid thanks to remote working. Why would anyone go back to stressful commutes, higher employment costs (business suits, food, medication, transportation), lost hours commuting, dirty washrooms, floors, desks and pollution?
It would be a straight pass on any job posting requiring in office presence.
I’ve seen it work both ways and employers get to choose what works for them and employees get to choose what works for them. I started my own firm and hope others do the same instead of arguing if WFH is good or bad or if hourly billing or monthly subscription is better. You can make any of those scenarios work.
Given how well you've proofread your post, seems like they promoted you permanently
"....promoted you permanently"
Wow, sweet burn KPMG!
Accounting firms are known for being pretty backwards. Remote work is no exception. Put proper controls and incentives into place and working remotely will be efficient and productive. When remote work doesn’t function how it should, this is a failure on the part of the company not understanding how to function in a remote setting. It’s still a fairly new concept and just needs more exposure along with older employers who can’t understand or refuse to understand how it works to retire or die. It will eventually win over.
Yes! Most of the pushback is from older males. Yes, I am one of of those but not everyone over a certain age is less enlightened. Only some 🤣
You are tone deaf. Feel free to go into the office.
