Just never be the person who asks if the team needs anything else EOD while wearing your jacket and holding your bag. That person sucks.
I always go to my boss and team members and say “Hey do you need anything I’m about to get out of here.” I find most people stay late because they want to look like they’re working hard.
Nahhhhhh I think you’re going about this all wrong. Your first two or three weeks, come in early and stay late, so you look super dedicated. Then people will view you as a “committed team member.” After three weeks, come in and leave whenever you want and nobody will notice or care.
OR - Just tell them you have a kid (wether or not it’s true). Works every time.
If you’re director level, set your own rules within reason.
If you’re working somewhere that expects that kind of unbalanced work/home life. Set you’re own boundaries, do kick ass work, and if that’s not good enough for your managers, move on. Life is way too short.
Here’s the thing.... to stay until 2am if there is something that is due... is fine, it’s the business. But to stay until 7pm to fiddle around on the internet to “save face”... I’m over that.... been over that... and don’t want to set the standard ... feel me ?
Just walk out and set the tone early. Worth a shot! The alternative is to live the rest of your life miserable then die.
If that’s the organization’s norm, you can’t buck it without paying a price. The only thing you could do is tell your team that you leave at 6 daily and that anything you need to finalize after that can be done later that night or first thing the next morning. But, again, you might pay a price for that
I made that move almost a year ago. My new boss knew where i was coming from and supported work life balance in my new role. I made sure to do great work and then leave when i had to leave. I definitely didn’t feel like i could do that earlier in my career, but i no longer feel the need to stay until midnight to prove myself. I prove myself between 8am-6pm and then go home and have a life (obviously there are special circumstances sometimes, but otherwise it’s fantastic)!
Leave whenever you can leave. If you have to work late, do it. If you have nothing going on and can leave at 4:30, do it. And if your company freaks out — is that the kind of place you want to work at anyway?
Your work should speak for itself. Especially at director level people should trust you will deliver irregardless of what time you leave. You should’t be concerned about proving “dedication” through hours, you should prove you are smart and capable.
I’ve found the combination of excellent work and work ethic combined with clear communication and boundary setting reliably gets me out around 6 any day there’s not something like a pitch or another big meeting that needs work. I’ve made sure my team can count on me on the regular so they don’t need to look for me when I’m not there.
Will be the same-ish. In an effort to help create boundaries early, I want to leave at or around 6pm everyday for a few weeks, obviously if there is something important I will stay. But I want to try and not be the person who just sticks around the office until it’s emptying out. But I also don’t want to seem like I am just clocking in and out. Has any one else approached a new job like this? Setting the tone from the onset?
Did you ask about work life balance at the interview? If they claim it was better, you may have a leg to stand on. Or just be resented by everyone.
