Thoughts on firms offering profit sharing v. 401k match? Google gave the basic info, but curious as to thoughts.

More to gain, more to lose with profit sharing. What is your risk tolerance? 401k is safe and steady if you believe we will continue the growth we had for the last hundred years despite the impending ramifications of doing almost nothing about climate change.

like

What? They call it profit sharing but it has nothing to do with a company making money. They can make a profit sharing contribution regardless. The only difference between a match and profit sharing is that an employee gets a profit sharing contribution whether or not they contribute themselves. A match or profit sharing can be discretionary which means the amount is subject to board approval (ex 6% match or 5% profit sharing) and can be $0 (ie not guaranteed). If there is a union or collective bargaining agreement there are most likely required contributions by the employer and have to be made.

helpful

We have 4% match and company has done ~9% profit share all 5 years I’ve been here. Profit share is obviously discretionary and vests.

like

Match can also be discretionary and can also vest

like

I was at a firm that offered 3% profit sharing. I'd prefer a 3% match in that case. The 3% matching is guaranteed - whereas the 3% profit sharing depends on if the firm makes money that year. In that case I'd prefer a 401k match hands down. However, if the profit sharing was more variable - i.e. the Company makes more money, I get more - I'd be interested in that if I believed in the Company.

like

Company does not have to make money to make a profit sharing contribution. It is a discretionary contribution that employees receive whether or not they contribute to the plan or not. Profit sharing contributions are great for lower paid workers that may not be able to afford 401k contributions themselves.

Hey all! I’m 30 years old. About to close on a house with a 5.75% fixed 30 yr mortgage. If you were me and your goal was to maximize your net worth by retirement, would you put a few thousand dollars extra into paying down the house faster or invest that extra money in the market? The 5.75% doesn’t feel that low but also not crazy high so I’m torn. Thoughts? 🙏

Feel like audit scheduling is always done on a knifes edge in that the timeline and staff schedules are enough so that if everyone works 60 hour weeks and no issues are identified then it can be filed on time. But even small things that increase the work can wildly throw off the schedule and cause hours to skyrocket for the staff on the job. No real point here, just ranting.
