CPA for 35 years here, and I have noticed a significantly reduced career potential since my early career. I definitely would guide any student or young professional away from accounting. Do something value creating for their career. AI will reduce the need for professional accountants down to a mere fraction of current employment. Imagine being 40 years old and playing musical chairs with thousands of mid-career unemployed folks equally desperate to make that house payment. It is already a lousy way to earn a living: insane hours with the earning potential of a clerk. And a rules-based decision model that makes it ripe for AI replacement.
My kids are younger, but I will definitely steer them away from accounting if they want to be happy. One of the worst choices I ever made was going into this profession. I wish I stayed in the military.
I would steer her away but I didn’t have to as she never showed any interest in accounting thank goodness.
Rising Star
I wouldn’t wish this career on my worst enemy
Figure it out on their own.
Parenting at its best
My son is 16 and has no interest in anything accounting or business related. He is interested in a medical career so I don’t need to guide him away.
Man I truly like accounting. It's a job to me, nothing more. A way to pay bills. I'm not looking for personal satisfaction from work. I get that elsewhere. I hope I don't have to steer my kids. They're still young
Definitely steering my kids away from the accounting profession.
Steer clear! Although they have watched me kill myself in this profession and have ZERO interest.
Kids most certainly need to be steered in some sort of direction when it comes to their future, to work toward something, even if they don't stick to it. I have never been a proponent of kids having much say in their life until they reach adulthood. Accounting and finance are options but I steer them towards trades: welding, plumbing, HVAC, mechanic, electrician, barbering...we extend too much of a leash in that we don't challenge our children to actually think about their future and commit to a path... guaranteed they will be in a much different, tougher world. They (we) don't have as much time as we may think.
I think there is a great benefit to understanding accounting, knowing how to read financial statements. I am excited to teach my kids when they get older. I want them to be able to invest wisely, and if they want to go into business for themselves, I want them to understand how the business is doing. If they are choosing between competing job offers, pick the company that is more financially secure, etc. But I do not expect them to go into accounting and will not encourage it either. There are far more fulfilling careers out there. I'm a slave to my laptop. My whole family complains about my work hours. I actually love accounting, but it's already not what it was when I got started almost 20 years ago.
I have a senior in high school that wants to fly for the Blue Angels or be in the Top Gun team one day so I doubt he has any interest in working in an office, I just encourage him to follow his own path. My other one is only 9 and wants to deliver babies "so she can kiss babies all day" and who am I to argue with that? Beats the heck out of accounts payable for sure
Both of my sons want to get onto Accounting or Finance, I don't see an issue with it. I make a decent living and I never worked in Public Accounting. I guess that's why I don't have that stress that everyone else has that makes them hate accounting. It's pros and cons in every job honestly. I'm just glad that these days they have the opportunity to do internships with these firms and take Accounting classes in highschool to see if they even want to pursue the field.
Accounting is great when it's outside of Public Accounting. The prob is many seem to box themselves into public acctg. I have found comfort in Corporate Accounting/Finance.
I am not steering my kids in any direction. That will figure that out for themselves. I give my opinions when asked
No, my kids know what they want to do since elementary school, one is 16 another one is 14 yo. I don't want to discourage them to go to college and follow their dream.
Go their own way
