Trying to exit from tech consulting to an Enterprise Tech AE role, but being pushed more toward AM and BDR roles. Any advice?

I've sold new projects and extensions, have written SOWs, responded to RFP's etc. A lot of consultative sales, procurement, enterprise strategic planning, and strong tech/data subject matter understanding.

What do I need to highlight on my resume to show I can handle full cycle sales?

Highlight the tech stacks you have used in your sales career. Speak on direct statistics that mention your impact. Be willing to take the SMB or Mid-Market AE role to get your foot in the door. 1-2 years of making impact within the organization and you will for sure have the role. Enterprise AE roles make serious money, so companies usually do one of two things:

Promote for the role from within because they know you know the product and have proven to produce.

Hire proven Enterprise AEs from other companies because they are actively making it happen on Enterprise level.

Hope this helps.

👆👆great advice

Write your tech consulting experience from a sales perspective. The best sales people are consultants/advisors so use this perspective to your advantage when you write your career summary. Focus on what you’ve sold in your last roles. Anything you can quantify (increased sales by x%, sold $x, first to land X size account/sold into this industry/this sized business, etc. Add that you have full sales cycle experience, etc. Always provide results like numbers, percentages, and successes which will go a very long way. Show how you increased sales (realizing your didn’t necessarily have a quota but show growth to bottom line). Write your resume like you’re already in sales bc you are. It may help to be open to smb sales too. The experience/reward/money can be great and your quota isn’t necessarily made or broken by a single large account. Key words in resume should be things like; channel sales, revenue generation, relationship development, p and l, consultative sales, account acquisition and retention, portfolio sales, sales forecasting and strategic prospecting, persuasive, six figure negotiations, complex sales cycle, C Level advisor, leadership, strong communicator, active listening, etc (obviously make these accurate to you). HubSpot, LinkedIn, etc offer sales and marketing certifications too which can help and you can share them on LinkedIn. Good luck!

OP you should really consider BDR/SDR if you can handle the temporary paycut. I was in your exact spot a year ago and exited Big 4 as a SC into enterprise BDR for F100. I wanted the established brand and sales training of a bigger company and they wouldn’t hire me for a closing role without previous quota experience. So I accepted the paycut and benefited from having less pressure and responsibilities to set myself up for long term success. Probably could’ve gotten AE/AM at a smaller company or startup but I chose to invest in becoming well-versed in lead generation, prospecting, qualifying and cold calling since that’s what I’d continue doing as an AE to have consistent funnel. You shouldn’t rely on your xDR for the funnel you own at the end of the day. Plus as an ex-consultant you’d outshine your team members quickly, many of whom are fresh from college. That’s what I did as a BDR and built a great internal reputation with my leadership, had set new records, mentored my younger colleagues, and easily won a few awards and earned rookie of the year, with multiple AVP’s asking for me to join their outside sales team after my year was up (was just promoted to AE this month). It was nice having that ramp-up and honestly flew by quickly. I’m glad to have cut my teeth with cold calling since it’s the often the toughest (but fun) part of the sales cycle, and you should have a well executed early stage qualification with thorough account research from territory segmentation, hunting and grinding it out on calls as a xDR. So I really appreciated my BDR experience, and now looking forward to getting back into CRM and building relationships with clients as a new AE and ex-management consultant. I completed my BDR tenure with several awards, new company record, and consistent quota-demolished history over a year, and am now recognized for leadership potential within my F100 tech company. Couldn’t have had a better start to my sales career, and because I took the xDR entry level job and will build upon this momentum as a new AE! It took me a year due to traditional company policy but you may rise quicker if you’re at a smaller company. What’s 6-9mo of cold calling in the grand scheme?

The concern will be demonstrating how you find new prospects and get them to engage with you. Consultative background is good for warm prospects but you need to be able to show that you can hunt.

like

Given your background, you should look at something like a BDE job for a consulting firm/GSI. You will come in making good money and it will be easier to pivot to selling licenses later on after you have some demonstrated quota achievement etc

i think Mid Market AE is a good place to start and sales managers will take a risk there

I broke into tech and I agree it was a challenge and most tech managers want tech experience. But not all people do...they want to know you can sell. So...be proactive, show your selling skills, build relationships even if there isn't an open position. Find the manager that will take a chance on you.

Alternatively, work with a resume to and modify your resume and LinkedIn profile to highlight your experience- related to enterprise sales. Good luck!

It is maddening isn't it?

Not really. I have years of b2b experience selling for 2 companies I started, top producer in car sales and now I hunt/sell/manage for an online affiliate marketing company. I can sell anything and continuously love to learn, but for some reason I must suck at selling my abilities to these tech companies. I'm open to account management, AE, or even customer success, but no bueno so far.

I'm curious how important it is to have a referral etc and what you'd recommend for applications opening in jan. Any advice is super appreciated I don't have any connections to the industry but it's something im interested in.
