Northeastern
Lehigh
Villanova
Case Western Reserve

Northeastern for sure. Their co-op program is incredibly unique and valuable especially for engineering

like

North eastern has a coop program and honestly it is so valuable. I got my first coop my sophomore year at a fortune 50 company in the engineering space. They offered to keep me part time through college paying me $30 an hour. Before I graduated they signed me on for 70k plus stocks and sign on bonus. 1 year out of college I had 4 years of experience on my resume and came over to consulting making 120.
Coop is a huge advantage and gives students all the soft skills like how to write emails, set up calendar invites. It also teaches you real tools used in the industry.

I loved Lehigh - most kids there party a lot, not sure if that is his thing. I sure enjoyed it though

Lehigh. Great academics and very balanced social life. Very strong job opportunities.

I went to Bucknell, Lehigh was #2

CWRU is one of the best schools for engineering. Hard pass on vilanova.

NE, really amazing co-op program. Meche friend worked for SpaceX and another extremely prestigious company I can’t remember through co-op. Location in Boston is amazing, and all my friends who went there loved it.

Northeastern grad here, cannot say enough good things about the school and Boston as a city. Feel free the dm if your son would like to chat with a recent alumni (2019 grad date).

like

Engineering? Case Western. They are an engineering school. Anyone with a degree from Case Western will never be wanting for a job.

Look at the career center site, particularly at career outcomes for engineering. I’d base it entirely on that, assuming all else equal.

If he has a strong preference for where he’d want to live after school that should be a primary consideration since these are all solid options. Would say IMO Case and Lehigh have strongest engineering pedigrees but others are fine schools too.

I don’t think he has any idea where he wants to live after college at this point.

Which would he prefer:
NE - amazing coop opportunity
Case - "prestige"
Minnesota - size and depending on location, scholarships?

CWRU is a pretty easy choice here, but Lehigh would be second.

And CWRU is located in one of the more underrated cities in the US, Cleveland. Although they probably should be prepared for more snow than they are typically used to. Thanks to the lake, Eastern Cleveland suburbs average 100 inches of snow every winter.

No, I don’t live in Cleveland, but I have relatives there.

Northeastern or UM

Reason being both are in major cities/urban areas so the opportunity to intern or Co-op at great companies is a strong possibility

All good options, I would out more weight on financial aid, culture and region fit than post-grad career opportunities (assuming he wants to go into engineering). Engineering is less prestige-based than many other fields and his opportunities will be more based on relevant experience than the brand of his degree.

As an engineering grad myself I beat out grads from more prestigious schools for position at a competitive multi-national engineering firm becuase I had 3 different internships by the time I graduated.

OP — if your son is looking at entry this coming fall, you might have to consider a “gap year”. I wouldn’t be surprised if all of the schools above attempt to do remote learning this fall. Do you really want to pay for any school where your son is learning over WiFi from your basement?

Check with each school and find their policies for gap years. I bet all of them will be OK with it.

I expect many students are deferring or even dropping out (especially international students), but at the same time I doubt schools can handle mass deferment—what would that do to high school grads next year?

We’ll see how things evolve. I’m wondering if my son might be coming off some of the waiting lists he’s still on—we certainly may take advantage of one of those if they come through.

Regardless, we need to make a decision and put down a deposit now.

Lehigh grad - line others have said we have one of the best engineering programs of your options. There is a co op program, but i think NE beats us by far in that category. Lehigh puts a lot of people in NYC, and 99% of those I graduated with were employed before graduation or right after.

I went to BC but NE is in a prime location. If your child wants to stay in Boston this is a fantastic choice. Not sure if it’s as prestigious as Case or Villanova or LH but perhaps the program is well known, not my area. Case is probably the best choice, but if you aren’t from Ohio not sure how you’d feel about moving to Cleveland. Personally I like the city, but to each their own. Not an ideal “college” town. If you care about holistic experience NE or Villanova will be better 100%.

Id say depends on what he wants after graduation.

For engineering industry, cwru or umn, no question. They have best engineering programs.

For consulting/business, consider nova.

Wondering what people think about my situation. I’ve been offered a role with a company. The job description didn’t mention college degree as a requirement. On my CV I have a section listed as “Education” and under it I have “Business Studies” with the university name and the 3 years that I attended the course (2.5 to be exact). It’s a 4 year degree and under this I have my High School equivalent with the years I attended there. The education wasn’t mentioned in the interviews. Continued below.

I’m a MRI technologist with bachelors in radiologic science. My goal is to become epic analyst. I do have a proficiency in Radiant. However, I am not having much luck with any applications. Almost all the postings require actual certification or build experience. I am thinking that I may have to go back to school. My options are either go for masters or go for another bachelors in IT/computer science. What could be my other options? Thank you.

How does a sole engineer at a company go about getting management to actually care how production machines run? I’m the only mechanical engineer at my company dealing with a half dozen cranky production managers who think that I can “work my magic” on a machine. It’s not magic, just ignorance about the machine actually works. How to I get a manager to stop caring about the end product long enough for me to actually teach them about their own machine?
