Not sure how it works elsewhere but we typically charge a set % of overall fee as expenses, and that amount is usually a black box to clients that they don't have visibility to. I've never been on a client facing project that's come close to the expense cap
Most of what BCG said is true for Bain as well. Utilization doesn't exist, expenses are just an extra 15% tacked onto the project fee. One other thing that a teammate (she used to work at Deloitte Tax before her MBA) noted is that there is way more thought put into tying workstreams to development opportunities for junior staff.
We don't give a damn about utilization
And we don't really care about budget if it makes the project easier, more efficient, or more comfortable/fun
Wow.. those are huge differences. At EY utilization and margins are EVERYTHIG.
depends on the team, but typically no? We have weekly "PTO" surveys/meetings to discuss and track project culture, sustainability, satisfaction, work life balance etc and it's taken pretty seriously
I thought D had culture similar to rest of MBBD
Different clients MBB is C suite . Big 4 is usually the director level and down (business units)
No
Hey D2! I would say overall hours are fine. My average is ~55 per week, with fluctuations up to 70 for bad weeks and down to 0 during beach time. More importantly, I don't feel like I have 'wasted hours'. If I'm done with work I go home, even if manager is still in the office. I also don't feel like I spend a lot of time doing manual tasks - we have resources to do those. Also important is that sustainability is tracked - if people feel like the balance is out of whack it escalates to partner/HR in extreme cases. How is work life balance at Deloitte?
McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, and Bain @sc2 JESUS. At first thought you're trolling but how can you be in this industry and not know who MBB is...?
Wow that is interesting. Do you guys have the culture where no one wants to be the first to leave at the end of the day like the Big 4?
What is work life balance? #implementationlife
What's MBB?
I suddenly doubt slalom consulting
My time with Deloitte S&O echoes BCG. Utilization means nothing if the work you deliver is excellent. Sometimes you have to ride the pine to keep yourself available for the next big gig, especially if your qualifications are hard to come by, and mission critical. Even NHL'ers take rest between shifts. We also don't dread being the first one to leave, if your work is complete, and the projects and roles you're staffed on are tuned to your development plan as best as they can be. Expenses and road lifestyle seem more lavish at MBB, and their clients are typically higher in the food chain. D does a lot more implementation work than MBB (and often as follow-on work from MBB strategic cases).
It's fine no one really knows what it is
Stay away from S&O ✍🏼
Clients value MBB over big4 that's why
Caveat: while this is true on the majority of BCG cases, there are a handful of clients that do direct-bill expenses, but typically only when they have a large volume of work over many years and have bargaining power.
