Somebody else thinks you should either take way more or way less.

If it’s truly unlimited you should be able to take every day off…

Never less than 20

Good rule of thumb is to try and take a week off per quarter, and then sprinkle in days here and there. I usually aim for around 6 weeks, all during the downtime between projects.

I worked at 2 companies with unlimited PTO and took vacations often when things weren’t too busy. At the first, I went out of the country 4 times in my first 3 months working there and at the other I took a 2-week vacation in the first 4 months (for my honeymoon). No one ever cared about how long or how often anyone was out as long as they had a plan in place for coverage.

My boss actually told me that I should aim for 5-6 weeks a year at our year end 1-1.

Unlimited PTO is a scam.

I get 25 so you should get more than that with unlimited.

I’d rather have the 25 days…. Unlimited PTO is useless when you don’t have capacity to take it… at least when you get a definite number of days, you have to take time off or you’ll stop accruing time off…. Or you get a payout for whatever you haven’t taken if you leave.

If I were you I’d grind up front, sleepless and all. Then take as many days as that going hard up front buys you (within the PTO policy guidelines of course - heard people get a cap as to how many at a time, but I’ve never had such a blessing).

We had unlimited PTO at EY before I left and there wasn’t a cap on how many hours at a time but there were requirements on how much notice to give based on how much time you were taking off. If just taking off 1 day, it didn’t require prior notice (though it was expected as a courtesy). If taking off 2 weeks or more, they required a month’s notice and approval. Approval wasn’t an issue as long as you didn’t take off an obscene amount of time during busy season and as long as there weren’t too many people out at one time. We had a calendar that everyone put their PTO into so we could plan around each other’s schedules. It was honestly really great and worth not getting the PTO payout when I left. I worked at 2 companies with unlimited PTO and took more PTO there. Now that I have a cap, I find myself trying to guard my hours in case I ever go on vacation because I want to use them at the right time. I rarely take time off now because of that.

27-32+

30-35ish days

At the very least, 3 weeks a year

With unlimited PTO, can you just take them whenever? Say you’re new at the firm and only worked there for a month so far, if schedule allows, can you take 3 weeks of PTO within a month of starting even though you’re brand new? I know this is an extreme example but can you do this?
