The Amex gold is the right choice for 99% of people. 4x for dining out and groceries is huge and still 3x on hotels and travel. I personally have both the gold and platinum and don’t think there’s ever been a month where I put more money on my platinum than my gold and I do about 10 personal vacations a year so about one a month. Platinum has gone downhill fast, pretty much all it’s good for now is Uber monthly credit, centurion lounge access, airline incidentals such as seat upgrades/checking bags if you don’t have status, and calling Amex once a year to complain and threatening to cancel the card and having Amex customer support give you like 25,000 points to retain you for another year. All the other credits they give you like Saks 5th, digital entertainment (which can only be used on like peacock, siriusxm & nytimes), Walmart+ and equinox are completely worthless. Even the clear credit which I enrolled in and set up I have never actually used because I already have tsa pre and the process of checking in via clear usually takes longer than standing in the 5 person normal line for TSA pre. The only way you’re getting the value out of platinum card is if you’re using the monthly Uber credits, already paying for Equinox and Walmart+ and plan to spend over $10,000 on flights and hotels this year. I originally only got the platinum for the fat sign up bonus and to use for traveling for work at my old company that let me use personal credit cards for expensing instead of business cards.
I’m considering getting amex gold too, as my major expenses are dining/grocery/gas, and maybe 1-2 trips a year. I’m thinking which card pairs well with amex gold, any ideas?
I’ll tell everyone, but the US Bank altitude reserve is a sleeper. Great travel credit reimbursement to offset the fee. 3x points on travel and mobile wallet purchases which can be redeemed at 1.5c each through their travel portal. So 4.5c back anywhere you can use Apple Pay. So you can get 4.5c on purchase that don’t normally fit into any bonus categories (clothing, groceries, home improvement, etc)
Have had the Platinum Card for nearly 10 years and love it. Some will argue it’s been devalued and some perks (eg lounge access) have diminished, but overall I easily get 2-3x the annual fee back in benefits.
I do use the following benefits: $200 airline credit, $200 hotel credit (I do stay in those hotels), Uber, NYTimes, Membership Rewards, Saks credit, and honestly the sleeper is the targeted Offers you can sign up for (eg $100 off at Best Buy). This is on top of club access when I travel.
Again, not for everyone (you arguably have to have a relatively expensive lifestyle for some of the perks to make sense), but it’s been good.
Amex gold!
