Why is it recommended you give a company 2 weeks notice when you are leaving but at the same time, when they are laying you off/firing you, they typically do it on the spot. I have known countless people layed off/fired on the spot over the years (especially after busy season) and everyone else when they leave give 2 week notice. Why should we relinquish power to corporations? Corporations really don't care about us. They pretend they do.

People leaving on their own accord are generally not pissed at the company. A small percent Fired employees have been know to cause havoc. Immediate separation upon termination is risk mitigation.

If you’ve been in PA long enough, there is plenty of eating hours. Also, there is the “make sure you’re accounting for every hour” conversation where people are too many hours. However, it’s the “make sure you are mindful of the budget” that most people get.

like

They might fire you on the spot, but probably pay out at least two weeks. At least in white collar jobs where there isn't any gross misconduct involved

like

Exactly, you might be let go on the spot. It they generally pay you for 2 weeks unless fraud was involved

I was still just a peon when I left my public accounting job, but I still busted it my last two weeks. Worked on client stuff until 6:00 PM on my last day. I liked the people I worked with and I wanted to ensure I could always boomerang in the future.

like

That's is one way to look at it and totally makes sense. The real question is what type of person do you want to be?

I'm not relinquishing power to my employer. I'm deciding how I want to live my life given the situation.

like

Another way to say this is what am I going to feel good about. How can I feel like I have gone above and beyond. I'm not going to let any company take my decision making power from me if I can help it. Feeling powerless in your own life is terrible.

I have quit other jobs with very little notice and felt fine about it because I knew the company had way more than enough capacity to take over my work.

like

What RSM1 said is a very important reason. As others have said, they also pay you a severance in lieu of a 2 week notice. Would you prefer to have to work those 2 weeks or just take the money and bounce? I know which one I’d take.

Also, when you resign, the 2 weeks is spent transitioning work, offboarding, and helps maintain good relations. You never know where people will move off to and some relationships are worth preserving. It may be a bit more difficult to see early in your career, but after 15 years, you’d be amazed how many past relationships come back to help you. All it costs you is 2 weeks, which you get paid for.

I’ve been on the bench with J1 for about 3 months. I was worried that because I couldn’t find another project, I would get laid off so I found J2, which pays more, is very meeting heavy, but I really like. Thinking about looking for a role on a project with J1 that’s not along my career path but will allow for me to do work with no calls so that I can manage both jobs. Does anyone have experience or advice?

It’s crazy how love can be so rosy, sweet & blinding that the red flags seem surmountable.
