Mediocre white men get hired all the time just for being white men 🙃 if filling an agenda gets my foot in the door, so be it
From what I’ve witnessed, people tend to hire people that remind them of themselves. If the hiring manager is a mediocre white dude well that’s how we get to where most agencies are today. I found out I was a quota hire because I was the only woman on an all male team. It hurt to find out, and the sexism was rampant.
Odds are low, as qualifications still matter. But if it happens to you, ride it.
You've worked hard to get where you are.
No one is going to hire someone who they don’t think can do the job. These are still businesses being run, and under performers drag down entire teams. This usually just means that you’re more likely to make it past the first screening call and get an interview. Just take it. There’s plenty of evidence that non-white people have a harder time getting to the interview phase. Consider this a long overdue correction.
I think it matters less about how you start and more about how you show up. Skills are built in any job, anyhow. There’s always going to be some learning curve irregardless of seniority/experience. Every new environment has its demands.
“Looking for BIPOC (insert whatever role)” is the new “We are an equal opportunity employer” statement: meaningless, rarely carried out, and you have to look at the employers’ track record of hiring and retention to see if they really mean it, or are just saying it because everyone else is saying it.
Sort of. I did MAIP and that got me to a big name agency to intern. That big name on my resume has opened a lot of doors but I sometimes wonder if I would have applied to that agency directly if I still would’ve gotten the internship.
Multicultural advertising internship program. They help set up BIPOC college students with ad and PR internships
At the end of the day, once your in the door, your work speaks for itself. If you’re not doing great work, you’re not gonna get ahead.
there is nothing wrong with being a diversity hire. as long as you contribute equally when you get in
If the ad says “Looking for BIPOC...” then yes, they are trying to fill a quota/increase diversity as job#1. It also feels illegal—if they said “woman” instead of BIPOC, wouldn’t it be discrimination? Don’t answer those ads. Go for the places that treat everyone the same and are looking for the best candidate
