Y'all, will my boss understand that I had to spend 5 hours yesterday formatting a spreadsheet as a matter of professional integrity? Will he be okay when I tell him that's why I didn't have time to get to anything else? 🥲

All he will hear is 5 hours, not that u fixed it.

Yeah that seems like WAY too long to spend on formatting. Especially if it’s for you own “integrity”. If your time would have been better spent doing something else your boss might be upset.

smart

Formatting doesn't seem like a matter of professional integrity. More like personal preference. And unless that is going to save you time later or make the deliverables more clear, it's probably not worth it.

One of the lessons I learned as a perfectionist is that certain things don't matter and are a waste of time. Learning to focus on things that really matter to the broader organization are where you should be spending your time. Sometimes getting the work done is more important than improving the formatting. Especially when things are in a time crunch.

I should follow up by saying that a file that is terrible it should be cleaned up. If you can't follow what is going on it isn't just formatting.

gotta get those numbers quicker my boi

HAHAHH OP this is soooooo real. I am the queen of wow this spreadsheet will save me time, and then spending hours and hours fixing and formatting. But I am a spread sheet girly to my core.

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult.
