In-person meetings are perceived as a waste of time as they restrict one’s ability to multitask. For a distributed workforce, you also have to arrange travel, which incurs an added cost in addition to taking people away from their families.
Virtual meetings allow people to get their work done while someone else is the center of attention. Plus, they can be done remotely and minimize disruption to people’s lives.
That is why so many people prefer virtual meetings.
But if the question is regarding participation, not satisfaction, then in-person is the way to go as it offers no escape by attendees.
But if you value employee satisfaction, then you have to listen to them and minimize inconvenience, which can diminish the value brought on by meetings.
Oh…and people hate fake team building exercises. One meeting per quarter/year does not build a team. It is the rest of the year, and how they are treated, that makes a team.
I have seen both work differently. In person can drive focus, but Zoom gives space for some people to speak more. I think it depends on the team, not just the format.
For me both are efficient
