Hi everyone! Posting obo my partner who is freelance and was just offered a 6 mo Story AP position contract. He’s been out of the game for a while so before he discusses pay, I am curious if anyone has any salary/pay rate insights based on the current market? This is based out of LA. His last role was also an AP position and was $1500 a week— that pay was from a year ago. He has about 2.5 years experience. Any help is appreciated!

The 40X rule is a pretty standard guideline for how much rent one can afford (your gross salary divided by 40).

But pragmatically (especially as one advances in their career), does it make sense to spend that much on rent even if you can afford to? I’m in my early 30s making $230K base salary. No partner, kids, or debt…but also no substantial savings. In my shoes, how much would you say is practical to spend on rent?

Any federal partner managers in this bowl for systems integrators or tech companies (think AWS, Salesforce, Microsoft)? Curious what salaries are for people in this role as there isn’t a ton of data for this job title specifically. Looking for salary numbers and YOE. TIA!

Fellow fishbowler, I have a question regarding how to approach the partner about an upcoming resignation of the current post. I got an offer from competitor firm and I am scheduled to start with the new firm at end of the month. EY is paying me the bonus on Aug 26th. Just wonder what's the proper way to notify the partners that I believe I was close to without jeopardizing my receipt of the bonus from the firm. Thanks so much for your guidance!

Hi. I have 20+ years of experience both in consulting and in-industry. I have a contact at McKinsey that I connected with that is willing to make an introduction/referral for me. A few questions: 1). What level should I be targeting. I’m willing to take a lateral to a degree because. . .well, it’s McKinsey, but I don’t want to come in too low salary wise and somehow undercut the value of the experience and the roles I’ve already held (VP/DVP). As such - is Associate Partner too low? 2….

Would you rather: (1) stay in big law (V100), collect your checks, keep billing 1900+ annually, knowing you’ll likely only progress to non-equity partner but stable pipelines for work; or (2) transition to boutique firm with no billable requirements, no minimum salary, on a pure revenue split (half of collections), option for equity partner in 16 months?

I’ve been networking with Deloitte individuals at the partner/principal level regarding possible roles. I have 2.5 years clinical experience (have a master’s degree) in rare disease/pharma/genetics/research. Some mentioned coming in as a consultant or SC on the strategy side. Anyone have an idea of what salary/compensation might look like?

Just seems like a lot of work and stress for a salary you could get in industry where you also don't have restrictions on stock purchases...

I am a big 4 tax manager with 6 YOE. Just got an industry offer today as a tax manager. Fintech firm with 30% base increase plus bonus and equity. The money is tempting but as an ambitious career driven person, I am now second guessing myself. Would I have a successful career in industry? Or would it be better to stick it out and try to be a partner one day.

What is partner comp like in big 4 vs top 10 vs mid-tier/regional firms?

Would I be insane to lateral twice in one year (8 months-9 months in)? I don’t dislike my current job, but the new job would be in my exact area of interest with a partner that I know well and is already a mentor to me. Same salary. Both big law but the firm I’m at now is a bigger name.

As a newish partner in a law firm, name something you found out that shocked you only after you made partner. I’ll go first, in the 15 years between when I was a law clerk to when I became a non-equity partner, my firm’s profits per equity partner amount doubled. Associate comp went up 20k in the same time period.

-Fixed salary 60% of Cravath scale
-No hours requirement. We expect you to work hard 40-45 hours/week, but we’ll respect your nights and weekends (with rare exceptions), and let you take holidays and planned vacations
-Work from anywhere

If it’s a marginal “no” for you, what would push you over the edge?

Hey all. Weird Q. May 2020 grad, lateraled to v20 in sept, started same day as brand new 2021 grads. Offer letter said, “Given your anticipated start date, you will not be eligible for a 2021 year-end market bonus.” My office’s head partner said same via offer phone call. Didn’t negotiate bc (dumb) was so giddy to accept. Did receive fall special bonus, tho. I worked my ass off the 15 weeks of 2021, want to discuss bonus with my team. Is it worth leaving big law for a FAANG job? Probably a $50k pay cut plus lose the partner track option for future. I'm probably 3 years away from making partner. Have a friend there already. Heard work life balance is better but comp not as good and lower ceiling. Thoughts?

I often hear numbers that partners start to earn 1/2 mil a few years after making it to partner.
What’s a ball park equivalent title for a f50/f100 (non tech) company that gets you to a similar comp. I am a director at an f20 (3 positions away from VP) and 5 from c-suite and I don’t anticipate making more than 400k in another 10 years even if all goes according to plan.
Ps I know the consultant answer is it depends but just trying to get some perspective.

Should I leave my 400k total comp in-house job (10 YOE) to make 550k at a biglaw firm as Counsel/Senior Associate with potential for partner track?

Firm passed me over for partnership but seems to be bribing me to stay with a bonus that is about 75% of my base pay. I feel good about the money but shitty about not making partner. Anyone else in this happy/sad boat?

I am currently interviewing for a Senior Partner Solutions Architect role and want to know what I want for compensation. What would be a good range to ask for annual compensation (base, bonus, stocks)? Would it be a good idea to leave Booz and go?

How would you equitably split finances in a household (allowing for individual autonomy at the individual level that also sufficiently rewards ones productive behavior and respects the union)? How might this change if there is a significant difference in compensation and hours worked within the couple? Let’s say one partner is an investment banker making $800k working 100 hours per week and one is a teacher making $60k working 40 hours a week. Split 50:50? 100:40 (via hours worked?) Etc?

Okaaaay 🐠 need some opinions on this. I turned down B4 to come to Google (at a smaller salary admittedly). The partner from the B4 reached out to me with a pretty significant offer, I know him personally as we worked together at my old company which has its benefits.. Offered M1, $160k base, $10k sign on, and 20% bonus. Currently at $115k base, 30k/yr in RSU and 15% bonus. I’m a PgM at Google and still a consultant by definition, figure I’ll be in consulting for the long run. Thoughts on this?

I would like to hit fire between 40-50. Currently 27, 185k total comp (125 for me and 60 for partner). Like my job don’t hate it don’t love it. Does an MBA make sense? I’m guessing it could take me to 170ish with that schools I’m looking at but wondering if the 40-50 retirement range makes an mba not make sense since I’d only have 10-20 years to save vs 12-22.

Would have to finance the whole thing myself. Current net worth is 140k. Thoughts?

Had my annual review earlier today and I’m not happy with the raise and bonus offered. Aside from the managing partner, there were several other non-equity partners in the room and I didn’t feel comfortable negotiating in front of everyone. I’d rather speak to the managing partner alone as he’s the only one who has the ability to make decisions. I’ll have to wait until Monday to do it in-person but wondering if I should set up a call between now and Monday to discuss? Would Monday be too late?

My partner and I are finishing a freelance position at an agency with potential to turn into full time in January. Would it be wrong to try and negotiate a higher salary for being taken on full time?
