A consultant and my ADHD prescriber/clinician told me that therapy can help us deal with performing under pressure, like interviews or public speaking. What do sessions look like?

My prescriber/clinician said they'd put me in uncomfortable situations, which I don't understand, but I'm interested in learning more about. I'd finally like to be able to tackle this lifelong problem that's cost me interviews and job offers. 😆

I did this in college as an alternative to being tested and medicated. I did things like public speaking, preparing for tests, and communicating with humans 😖. It worked well.

As a working, single parent, it became difficult to translate those skills without having panic attacks. My new therapist worked on setting short and long term goals. I had “homework” often—most of which was about challenging my thought process, writing down triggers, and what to do instead.

I was challenged daily because I was in a shxtty situation anyway. Now that I’m not, It’s much more manageable. When my symptoms flare up, I have tools outside of medication.

I imagine they’d simulate the worst case scenario to trick your brain. My psychologist was always trying to trick my brain or get me to trick myself but I think too much for that to work.

Any! But you kind of have to find your fit. The first one just happened to be super holistic, so she was happy to help me find ways to manage outside of medication. It was a trial gone well.

My PCP recommended the second one. She had nice strategies and was open to “holistic”measures, but still thought I should consider medication 😅

Anyone a manager? I’m recently diagnosed (26F) and I can’t help but beat myself up everytime I fall short of my to do list. Makes me feel like a huge disservice to my team. I’ve been trying vitamin D and working out, but it makes my “highs” and “low” SO extreme. The simplest things are so complex in my mind.

If anyone feels similar, how do you manage these feelings? I’m personally considering switching to an individual contributor role, but can’t help but feel like a disappointment if I do.

Hey so like - newfound reason for my procrastination since I got on Ritalin - a tendency towards "putting things off so I can enjoy the hyperfocus later". I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 12. My family did not opt to put me on medication. I illegally discovered Adderall in college. Worked incredible. Got diagnosed after college & after having been fired from my first job. Passed the CPA exams on Adderall. Went off of it again. I do everything well at my job except for attention to detail within my excel files & emails. Will taking ADHD medication really fix this? Does anyone else have this issue and was it resolved by taking medication?

So today was my first day on a stimulant (diagnosed as an adult), and everyone says its suppose to feel like *boom* magic, or normal (?) , I guess. Knowing that is figurative, what should I actually be expecting? I feel mostly the same, I think, though I came in and actually did started my work today. But I mean, somedays I do that...I just don't want to psyche myself out if I'm expecting too much. Or pscyhe myself in if I actually might not be experiencing what I should.

I just started meds yesterday and the change in my focus and attention to detail is mind blowing. My only concern is, just yesterday I had a tough feedback session with my manager around how I’m taking too long to complete my work, giving them anxiety around close deadlines. I’m new in the job (3 months in). Should I explain anything about my adhd to my manager or just wait for them to notice the change in me?
