That’s really dramatic. I’ve never chosen a candidate based on a thank you note. If I receive one it’s nice. If I don’t. I move TF on and get on with my life.
I once DIDN’T hire someone BECAUSE of the thank you note they sent. Go tell that to your recruiter and watch their head 🤯. #BeingSeriousBTW
Well you were both oriented towards each other during the interview...
Thank you notes are a dusty, old, corporate thing. Just be honest and humble when you interview. That should do it.
With all of my best jobs I’ve gotten, I did not send a thank you note. I don’t care literally at all if candidates send one. Also my current company will not give out our emails and they don’t follow a prescribed formula.
You thank each other at the end of the interview. There’s needs to be another thank you? Nope.
If the hiring manager freaks out for not receiving a thank you note, I don’t want to work for that person anyway.
This is a great point! The kind of person that wouldn’t hire someone qualified bc of a thank you note is not who I want for a boss.
Yes, people are petty.
FWIW - I “FREAK OUT” at recruiters fairly often.
Not receiving a thank you note makes me rethink a candidate, even if I liked them a lot. I should caveat I am in PM. To me, a timely thank you note shows respect, consideration, organization, perhaps resourcefulness (they may not have my email address, and the days of sharing business cards are obv long over). All of these traits are core to PM (and Account, in my opinion).
For other departments it may not be as important, but for me it’s been a deal-breaker.
I don't give a shit at all if you send one. Who cares. I just talked to you for an hour, I know if I want to hire you.
Also, I sat through a multi day training about interviewing and they said you're not allowed to base a decision on a thank you note. I can't remember if it had anything legal attached to it for some states, but I clearly recall talking about it bc I don't send them.
“I don’t give a shit at all if you send one” I don’t know you, but I love you.
I worked with an SVP who always used that as a reason to not move forward with a candidate he just didn’t like in the first place.
If it were a creative I’d say this feels petty. (I can’t see Wieden doing this for example.) But maybe if you’re really on the fence about someone...
I’ve never sent a thank you email to an interviewer. Thanks for... saying yes to the invite to talk with me?
Thanks for taking the time to speak with me. Our chat gave me a positive impression of XXX Agency and I am excited about the role. I believe that I’d be a strong addition to your team because I offer: - Extensive experience doing X. - A passion for Y. - A broad range of skills, including Z. Please let me know if there is any additional information I can provide. I look forward to hearing from you to discuss next steps. Sincerely, Jedi Master
Some people will freak out. Personally, I think it’s bad form but would overlook it if I liked you enough in the interview.
How does one “literally” freak out? Curious.
Right?! When I asked he said he’s had clients ready to extend an offer to a candidate and wanted to hold off on sending because they didn’t receive a thank you note

If I get one from somebody it’s nice. And immediately makes me notice the other ones who didn’t. So I don’t miss it. But I do when someone else beats you to it
Of course, because I need one more thing to read.
You may not like it but you never know who is expecting one. Always send a thank you card/email.
TBH I rarely send thank you emails. I just got a new job and had 2 other offers on the table.
I don’t think people care as much as people make it out to be. It’s nice to have, but not a deal breaker. Usually comms are through a recruiter so you don’t even have their email, and I’m sure a CCO or CD would appreciate one less email.
Sounds like those people need to release some sexual tension
Funny thing about interview thank you notes is no one wants to write them and no one wants to read them. But hey why not keep it up?
