Titles matter today more then ever! With these firms constantly trading employees, you want to be positioned correctly. Remember, you get one shot to negotiate starting and title.
Do not give up, think the best, maybe there was mis-communication internally. Go back and ask. If you want the job, go get the job!
My thoughts exactly. Why would i regress to senior associate title after being at a director level at this point in my career.
Coach
What level were you at ACN?
AD at UHG is a manager for consulting purposes but they’re usually ICs. AD is the same level as M in OAS. There’s a lot less rigor at UHG (~somewhat dependent) in comparison to a consulting firm.
I get the frustration but another consulting firm will probably bump you down to their pre-manager level too. If you compare base pay what kind of a hit are you taking?
I came in as a 3rd level of consultant. I was up for promotion the following year but left as promotion was delayed due to COVID
Bait and switch… seems like a shady way to start of a new employment relationship. Personally, I’d tell the HR rep that you and the Partner aligned on you coming in as a Director, and you are confused with the offer you received.
My current tc is $275k. Base, bonus and equity
Director
You should pass. They were not honest with you
Haha they’ll bait and switch; I also hear their first and second year directors often don’t get a bonus because it’s so hard to get utilization and billable hours without the connections. So even if you got the Director offer it’s still less than your comp unless you’re extremely confident in your ability to pull in 850-1M of revenue. Good luck on the partner call!
Mentor
He meant he’s not expected to sell. The hours are a byproduct of working with MDs
I indicated to the recruiter that i will be circling back with the partner to align on title.
I have a meeting with the partner this Wednesday to discuss this.
Coach
Circling back and align all in one sentence? You’ve got this, OP!
Agree that this is the old bait and switch. But clumsy timing! Usually that's not pulled until after you've committed. What justification have they given? Do you believe it? In any case, I'd be very leary of working for people who have already demonstrated slippery, unpredictable, unreliable behavior. When people *show* you who they are, believe them. Too few walk their talk.
I respectfully informed the partner and the recruiter that I will not be moving any further with the interview process.
At UHG, I was managing about 5 consultants. I am taking hit of about 50k in base pay if i accept senior consultant role, and 30k hit in base pay for director level role. 50k is too big of a paycut for me to swallow.
Sure.
I honestly feel there is a bit of miscommunication that took place between the recruiter and the partner. So, waiting for my discussion with the partner on Wednesday
Coach
So sorry OP. Thanks for keeping us updated.

Yeah. That’s a hard pass. TC for for a SA in a good year is 180k. What is your current TC?
No idea how common. Just providing a data point
do they not have a manager role in between SA and D? seems silly to drop you that far in title and comp
Bowl Leader
Yeah A&M HIG groups is A - SA - D - SD - MD
Wow. I mean at McK I know a lot of exp. hires with substantial exp go in also at Assoc / Sr level - it’s lost soemthing you have to do, but then get promotoed quickly, but this is very different. Its offensive to be brought on as a senior with those creds.
Seems common that whatever you think you should come in at, the firm bumps you down a level. Some with 10+ years industry experience have come in at Snr Associate

I laughed really hard when you’re going to tell me a person with 10+ YoE is going to take a SA role.
SA will be about 250k tc so the economics just don't make sense to make the switch. With a substantial base decrease
Bowl Leader
They always exaggerate the bonus potential. Only way you’re going to bonus 100+ % is if you hav soldi connections at the SD/MD level.
