Are there companies that still offer a pension plan? Gone are the good ol days of employee benefits, now it’s all about cost cutting and getting rid of good benefits..

Pensions are definitely phasing out. So many legal hurdles involved with them and they are a hefty long-term financial challenge for employers.

The only person I know who has an actual pension is my stepdad. But he worked for the government for 30 years. I don't know anyone in the private sector who has a pension.

IBM is bringing back annuities yes. There was a piece about it in January.

I have a pension with my company, but 5 years ago, they slashed the pension and revamped it leaving us with only a small amount vs. what we were anticipating when we retire. It was a terrible blow to all of us who worked for years under the guarantee of a certain pension when we were first hired.

That’s brutal,is that even legal to amend the terms? People might have just stayed for the pension and the firm turning its back is cruel to say the least

You're right about that. I haven't seen a company offer a pension plan as part of their benefits package in so long. It has to have been about 4 years

Can someone point me to some material where I can read about profit sharing vs 401k. I get the concept, but I am trying to understand is 10% profit sharing vested over 5 years better than an employee 401k match of 6%?

From my understanding 10% PS is better because it’s just a standard 10% on top of whatever I contribute though it takes 5 years to vest. Does this mean if I leave before 5 years I don’t get any of it?

Hi all, I have a question regarding retirement accounts. I am not sure if I should choose a Roth or 401k (company has 4+2% match). Currently 23, base salary is ~100k and investments have brought 45k this year which has me teetering between a 22-24% tax bracket. Wondering what the usual tax bracket is of people retired (around 65yo) as I’m not sure anything would bring in significant income with the exception of investments. In my case would a Roth make sense? Appreciate any answers!!

Oak park vs. Evanston - thoughts?

I am an senior associate at a small (8-10 attorneys) immigration firm in NYC. My base is 110k and I get 30% for the cases and clients I bring in. My revenue was 370k last year and I did 250k till April this year.

My issue is, I have so much firm's work that I have hard time to work on my cases/clients. It feels like my cases are supposed to be done after hours (like after 6 pm). My work hours are crazy. I feel this is unfair and since my firm's taking 70% of my sales. Should I ask for a raise?
