Been solo for about 2 years now with my own PI firm; WLB comes and goes depending on my case load and what stages the cases are at. October-December is the busiest time of the year for me because that’s when the insurance companies put the most amount of pressure on adjusters/attorneys to close out files.
I’d say my average work week is about 55-70 hours of work while handling about 50 cases at a time completely on my own; even if I’m not in the office, I’m still working on my phone pretty much all day. I’m always home before 7 and I still get to go to the gym everyday and see my friends on the weekends. I work a few weekends here and there to take care of admin stuff. I’m starting to get to the point where I need to hire some staff because I’m getting more litigation cases, but even with that, by hiring the right people you can absolutely keep a decent WLB.
The problem is most solos take on more cases than they can handle because they don’t want to miss out on the business. Then they lose the WLB that they need to avoid burning out & inevitably do burn out, and then their business suffers because of that.
The settlement amount itself isn’t necessarily going to change just because it’s in that time frame, but in my experience I’ve found adjusters/OPC to be a lot more cooperative & work with you in settling during those months. They’re definitely MUCH more responsive during those months; I’ve had adjusters who’ve ghosted me for months suddenly blow up my phones every other week during those months just to settle cases.
If your case has merit & you can justify your demand, I wouldn’t recommend waiting months to settle just so it falls in that time frame.

How are solos this busy is my question..........
Two reasons. 1. Many solos worked at other firms and started their firms with plenty of clients. In short, all the work they were doing at a prior firm followed over to the new solo firm. 2. Part of being solo is being a business owner. Running a firm, like a business, is a full time job.
Out source. Find virtual staff.

I wouldnt say most solos leave with so much business they are drowning like they are in big law.....there's just no way......the only way I can see someone drawing this comparison is if they never worked in biglaw.
Or they’ve never been a solo.
Hit up the EA bowl for legal admin talent. Plenty seeking gigs for backend admin, litigation support.
