Your position has been eliminated and yet they’re telling you to write a story about what happened and why you’re leaving? Sounds like BS PR for HR. I don’t know why it would be required of you at all. They put you in a really awkward position. if they are “giving you the opportunity” you can respectfully turn it down. It’s not your responsibility to make nice and save face for them. Bottom line is they’re pushing you out don’t make it easier for them. What do you get out of it? Do they think you’re saving face or are you saving theirs? And anyone who works there knows the truth. I find a ridiculous that they’re putting the responsibility on you to announce that your position has been eliminated. I’m sorry if my response is too salty but you don’t owe them anything. You don’t need to create a story they wrote it for you. They just don’t want the truth to come out. But it already did.
In addition to the advice the ladies gave above, now would be a good time to speak with an attorney and identify if there is any opportunity to be compensated for being pushed out. @flynanced on Instagram has great content surrounding this as she was recently laid off and renegotiated her pension so she is able to enjoy the break and not stress about it.
I agree that you can turn this offer to create your narrative down. A position elimination simply is what it is. If they just state that who knows how many offers you might have to help you find that next opportunity. I would just say “I’m good. Just stick with the facts and don’t paint me in a bad light”. The rest is up to them.
Can you share why you’re reluctant to say what it is - something like: the position has been eliminated and you’re optimistic for your personal future and the future of this company
In the past when I’ve had to eliminate a position I gave them the opportunity to control their narrative. But it was not to hide that fact, but rather to allow them to make up a story if they really wanted to. One chose to tell the truth. The others decided to say they’re leaving by their choice - just as you said.
Could you imply that you’re gonna take the opportunity to reflect and recharge before deciding what’s next? It’s more refreshing to read this kind of update imo
Yeah let them deal with the fall out and shockwaves. Not your circus
I just sent my announcement for approval, we'll see what they say. I went with the truth (in a very professional way, obviously). I feel better that I stuck to my morals. I really appreciate everyone's feedback—Pollyanna, salty, or otherwise. Thank you all 🫶🏼
I would tell them my job was eliminated. They should all know they could be next.
Tell it like it is. What are they gonna do- fire you???
Chatgpt will generate that for you! It’s amazing! Try it!
Update since responses are still rolling in: the note went out to the entire company. In summary, it said they eliminated my position, it was a surprise but leaving on good terms, I don't have anything lined up yet. Sprinkled with the thanks and appreciation for working with everyone. The response and outreach from my colleagues has been overwhelming. They are largely outraged, and have been incredibly supportive. And I stand tall knowing I didn't lie, I didn't burn bridges, and I now have countless offers from people to act as a reference for me. Thanks again for everyone's ongoing support and feedback.
“It is with a heavy heart, that I must tell you I am leaving XYZCompany. I wish I had the chance to let everyone know just what they meant to me but, I was just made aware that my position has been eliminated. As this was something I was not anticipating, I currently do not have another role lined up. Because of this, I have decided to focus my energy on securing a new role, as I depend on my wages to sustain myself and my family. In line with my dedication and loyalty to XYZCompany, I have been asked on several occasions to provide my exit statement so it can shared with those who will continue on here. In future, I look forward reaching out to those I worked alingside to let them know just what they meant to me. For now, I wish everyone nothing but the best.”
I’m so sorry this has happened to you and that not one person has one thought occur to them what it must be like to be on the receiving end of the exit statement. I hope whatever you end up saying, it serves as a red flag to those still employed with your sf company. Your thoughtfulness and loyalty will be appreciated elsewhere and I hope you are in a position to take your time and find the perfect match with your future employer.
I do fully hope that you give a statement that’s just nice enough for them to have to blast out, but subtle enough for everyone reading it to understand what disgusting position you’ve been put in.
Coach
Thank you 🫶🏼 I think part of the reason they gave me the opportunity to write a statement is because they knew the impact it was going to have on the people. I wrote it the way I did for my colleagues and for me, but certainly not to do any favors for the company. It provided my friends and colleagues with the truth, told them I'll be okay, opened the door for referrals and for people to reach out with any questions, whatsoever.
#teamsalty thank you for your post, glad it helped in some small way !
TELL THE TRUTH: After several (years) of dedication, my position has been eliminated and I am working toward identifying my next opportunity. For anyone here who has enjoyed their time with me, I would like to ask for your endorsements and support toward my next chapter. Thank you.
Sorry just saw your update. Glad you shared the truth
This doesn’t add up
Coach
Yeah I am def laid off. That's the story I got. If there's more to it, they haven't let me in on that.
If you make an announcement that says anything other than "my position was eliminated" I would worry they would use it as evidence to avoid paying unemployment.
I agree with Manager 1 and EY1. Life always throws us obstacles that we have to learn how to overcome. Being salty says more about you than it does the company that let you go. It actually doesn’t accomplish much. I’m not a Pollyanna and saying we have to be happy about everything, but there is an art/skill in reframing your narrative in a way that is honest yet optimistic. Gratitude can help you process what you’ve learned here and what you are hopeful for in the future. Good luck!
Honesty is always an option IMO
Don't say anything. Just leave. You don't owe anybody a thing. Then when internal people come asking where you are tell them your job was eliminated.
Tell the truth as they you. The company said they eliminated your role, why would you put them in a positive light. Or they don’t want instill fear in the other employees or fearing their job security.
I would just say I don’t feel comfortable with this, I will just leave with no announcement. If they push back I will just ask them to help me understand the purpose of sending an email out . And then ignore whatever they say :) and leave quietly ! They don’t get to ask for this, it’s your own choice to announce or not and to share reasons or not !
I haven’t read through all the comments but recommend you don’t have wording that indicates you left voluntarily. The company could use that to say you resigned and not pay unemployment benefits.
