Hello all,
Would like to know specifically about Queer inclusion at SocGen Societe Generale. What is the attitude of mangers and HRs towards treating LGBTQ identifying candidates? Is company really inclusive or it’s just a lip service? Considering an offer with the company but being an out and proud Queer woman, super anxious and concerned.
Are you a diverse person? Are you an ally to DEI?

“Tone policing is defined as "a conversational tactic that dismisses the ideas being communicated when they are perceived to be delivered in an angry, frustrated, sad, fearful, or otherwise emotionally charged manner." Managers striving to create a workplace based on equity and inclusion must understand how tone policing silences members of marginalized groups and allows discrimination to persist.” https://www-businessinsider-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.businessinsider.com/how-to-identify-and-help-stop-tone-policing-in-workplace-2020-8?amp

TLDR: I’m not even an AdColor apologist as I do believe they have work to do.. I just really dislike irony and HAD to say something about launching this as an anti-AdColor.. just to be similar in many aspects. I sincerely do hope this turns out well though. #
Ok, Let’s talk about it.
Per previous comments above, saying someone is hating is ironic and predictable. Follow me for a second.
For those who haven’t seen it here’s the release article from yesterday behind the paywall: https://archive.ph/rB3CU
The first thing that came to mind when reading this & seeing some of the people involved was this article from a couple years ago centered around said folks (3 of the founders are quoted):
https://brandandculture.com/adcolor-naming-droga5-aor-considered-another-blow-to-bipoc-advertising-community/
(Please read both of these as valuable context for the rest of my comment)
In the same spirit of criticism that they put out, I hope they are receptive to others’ commentary about their efforts.
On the subject of “tasting hate” - Blackweek is coming off as an alternative to AdColor (again, yes we know AdColor isn’t perfect) from people who have been hating on it for a While. This quote alone from Walt in the Blackweek release yesterday was very telling:
“This is a solutions-driven opportunity to come together for real results,” Geer said. “This is not the place where we’re going to come to say ‘We’re coming here to party.’ This is not to come to say ‘We’re going to celebrate us, or we’re going to give awards to us.’”
Historical context (his and his team’s past comments) makes me immediately think he’s shading AdColor. (Let’s be serious here)
Which leads me to a few points:
-to say Blackweek won’t be a party or celebration then later say there will be social elements is a joke
-to announce this (seems like the urgency was MLK day?) but the dates aren’t 100% set in stone and they are waiting to see what AdWeek does so they can line up - is a curious choice. Don’t know if y’all thought it through, that people will want to pay for two simultaneous conferences and shuttling all over NYC. Not to mention WAATBP is also around this time.
-this clearly has its own brand of elitism as outlined in the release (AdColor has been accused of elitism).
-the convos they want to have that are tough and real - have also been had at AdColor. Yall aren’t the only ones that have hard convos. (Sorry, Walt)
-so yall will also have sponsored (aka paid for) panels… just like AdColor and other conferences have been criticized for. Does it become acceptable when yall do it?
-the tickets for this are also expensive. I suppose a conference isn’t as easy to pull off as it looks.
Please don’t confuse constructive feedback and commentary with “hate” (sound familiar?) but I think y’all need to hear beyond your echo chamber because the irony is loud.
I read the release and was disappointed because there is SO much room for conferences like this to coexist - especially if you spread them out through the year.
I would have been excited about this had yall just come out focused fully on your own objectives and goals vs framing it against/ doing this thinly veiled shade against AdColor (and others) as if there isn’t room for everyone.
All said, I hope it firms up and sincerely hope this turns out well because I want to see all of us win. Good luck yall.
This. This Right Here is gold!

Hard to take this serious with andre gray front and center.
This is essentially where are all the black people. Another conference that'll be themed for Black people but a handful will benefit and agencies will perform like they're doing anything. Younger POC will attend and be excited, good for them. Great press picture too.
Fair point, lol. And want comparing the two. My point was ascolor beef didn’t make him. And VML is very white indeed…what agency isn’t. But we have a lot of Black executives. More than any other holding agency.
I approve of their efforts but I know the money behind these events. I know what they really think about black talent. But let’s not bash those black ad folks. They are trying. What is everyone else doing?
Chief
The "what is everyone else doing" q is ridiculous if what you're doing only benefits you and yours. Loads of Black ad professionals doing shit that isn't co-opting other ideas.
Tiffany Golden started a talent agency for POC
Chelsea Curry created C0ffe3
This is a glorified conference that uses Black trauma to fund personal goals. Folks have every right to question and critic.
It’s a little weird to me that an organization claiming to be about inclusion would name themselves after a singular group. Especially for people in marketing. Definitely reads as if it’s only for one group. And maybe that’s the goal. But if it is, don’t call yourself inclusive. We’d make a lot more progress if we all linked up.
Just like the whole “all lives matter” thing right?
Idk any of the politics behind the scenes but I’m honestly having a hard time grasping any of the tangible benefits of attending outside of maybe networking?
Attended and it was fantastic. They really pulled together a well curated event.
Now that DEI is DEAD, I don’t really see any forward movement in this area. It’s all for show because I’m still going to creative meetings with mostly white people.
