I had a similar experience where I went through 5 rounds, including a “challenge” presentation. I received and accepted a verbal offer. Waited for two weeks for the written offer while being told it was being worked on/approved. Then was told that all hiring was on hold until further notice. That was in March (whole process took 5 weeks). They just reached out again this eeek and told me they are hiring again and the job is mine if I want it.
Unfortunately the flakiness & indecision in corporate hiring for tech industry roles (both technical roles as well as non-technical ones like sales) has been the norm lately, since the tech companies’ liquidity & leadership composition themselves have been fluctuating (ex. Anything from: a drop in private equity or public stock share price; paying contract/s that fall through; investor/s pulling out; banks/lenders changing terms; some leaders resigning/leaving/getting terminated = inability to keep original plans for hiring & onboarding new talent).
Sometimes even industries that are not about technological software and hardware act like this too since they too have their own mergers & acquisitions plus other drama that can trigger change in hiring and staffing.
Like what Manager 1 said, though, what you went through in being subjected to 5 interview steps (including being flown out in person) only to not get the role seems especially brutal, and indicates that the hiring company’s leadership (or lack of) itself is that internally messed up to begin with.
Perhaps not getting hired into that wild drama (I.e. I suspect there may have been internal candidates as well as poached/headhunted candidates being considered too) might turn out to be a blessing in disguise for you, to spare you from possibly getting laid off anyway by such shaky ground leadership somewhere down the line through no fault of your own.
I know this all sucks, but please do not get overly discouraged since there may be other better-led companies (maybe even better-run Small to Medium sized Enterprises/SMEs w/ less layers, even though their pay & benefits package may not be as big as that of well-run/well-led larger firms) out there with less hairy processes needing you . . . plus maybe entrepreneurship/freelancing/being a highly skilled & well-paid sales consultant/advisor/independent sales & business development contractor may be in the cards for you too.
Thanks for this thoughtful reply! My wife and I settled on “blessing in disguise” as well! Greatly appreciate the kind words because the first few days after the “Nevermind” were TOUGH. Big time “imposter syndrome” and “maybe I’m not good at this?” Thoughts but have since subsided and the realization of “wow this place must be a train wreck to be so scattered and disorganized”,
In the 3 months of interviews, I certainly could have learned whatever was “lacking” from their POV. But 🤷♂️ haha
I recently applied to a place right next to my apartment, put a lot of effort into preparing for an interview, had a strong cover letter, communicated with hiring manager, etc. so i joint the zoom interview and nobody else joins. Turns out the girl who was supposed to interview me just… joined a zoom call with herself and didn’t realize. They apologized and rescheduled with me. Tell me they like my personality etc. and they’ll let me know in a few days, and then tell me they don’t think i’m a good fit.
It’s definitely less extreme than being flown out for an interview, but i had a similar thought process of “wow they must be really disorganized, would it even be a good place to work for?”
That is brutal im sorry to hear that
