Currently doing R&D tax as senior and have an offer to move to International Tax as experienced tax associate at top 10-20 firm (CohnReznick, Moss Adams, BakerTilly). For someone who wants to make a jump to law firm later on, would you recommend the move?

If you want to go biglaw, you need to be in a big4 type setting.

International tax is a good place to be but biglaw jobs are not easy to find. I don’t think many law firms do significant r&d work but the experience should be helpful.

If your end goal is biglaw by any means necessary, you should also consider SALT work or benefits work. Big growing need in those areas and dare I say, easier to get into biglaw with that.

Otherwise, getting into biglaw is tough. I don’t think you need to get in within 3 years of graduation (I didn’t). Yes, you’ll eventually take a class year cut but whatever.

Also - really figure out if you want to do biglaw. It’s not easy and the hours can be tough. Yes the money is absolutely great but you really have to earn it. You have to make sure your work is top notch and a lot of big 4 offices just don’t care like law firms do.

If you want to end up at a law firm, you should try and do that now. It is very difficult to move to a law firm, even if coming from the Big4. A midmarket firm will make that even more difficult.

International will give you better experience for your resume than R&D if trying to move to a law firm. Just know this will be very hard

like

Try to get the Senior title, a downgrade doesn't look as great.

If you’re at a big 4 stay there and get relevant experience that a big law firm will value (hard to do unless you’re in WNT or M&A). If you want big law, do it earlier in your career (within 3 years of graduation). Typically, if you stay too long in public accounting, a big law firm won’t touch you unless you make it up to the partner ranks.

I also recommend finding a recruiter with close ties to big law firms.

I saw a job opening for a Tax R&D Attorney.

Question for ex-consulting (esp MBB) folks who landed up at Google - are you happy with the decision you took? Why / why not? I'm an MBB Consultant with an offer for a role in Strat Ops in another country. I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?

Interested in working in PE, but experiences align more with the Ops side (3 YOE in strategic value creation). Is there a significant difference in total comp potential between ops and investments roles? Not sure how to make a case to break into investments with minimal DD experience, so thinking about Ops recruitment (Associate). Would also be grateful to learn about potential strategies non-DD focused consultants have used to ultimately break into investment teams.
