I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

When and how do you push back on people senior to you? Fifth year dealing with supersenior associate (11th year) who completely lacks good judgment & common sense. One of those super smart but impractical types. As just one example, he recently called me to tell me to call someone who’s on vacation and ask them to send a calendar invite. I offered to send myself but apparently that wouldn’t work (presumably because it would be efficient & make sense.) At what point (and how) do I Just Say No?

I blacked out and hit on a coworker at a work-related event. I would never have normally done it (aside from the stupid amounts of alcohol in my system) and they are in a committed relationship, making everything so much worse.

No idea how I’m going to interact with them in basically every meeting I have for now until I leave the company.

Could someone please suggest how to handle this situation?
My manager (Technology Director) sees me as an emerging thread to his position and stopped sharing details / trying to avoid including me in visible projects etc.,
FYI - His manager is the division head and Managing Director.
Why I think my manager tries to move me out?

Sometimes I let people know I'm sober. I don't talk about the 12 steps unless someone asks. I try to practice attraction rather than promotion. Also I've never done a noon meeting but sometimes I really think I should!

How do you navigate a working relationship where someone in a different department but at the same director level as you consistently assumes seniority over you? The thing is they're great and can be an ally, but they're frequently shutting down the team's work and having a negative impact on the team's morale and output.

Had an associate of mine recently confront me and say he has a crush on me. Told him nope and that would be very unprofessional. He has reassured me that this won’t impact our working dynamic but lately there’s been a lot of pushback on any direction given to him or the team. Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I’ve slowly started drinking less and less. And the less I’m drinking the more I realize just how much of my time revolved around alcohol. From going to get it, to drinking it to fighting hangovers. Now I realize I need something to fill all that time with. Especially now that I’m not spending all day saturday and sunday deathly hungover. I go for walks and run errands…but in a shock to me…there’s still a lot of time left. How did you start spending your time once you stopped drinking?

Is there a group for people who aren’t alcoholics, but have issues drinking? Is it rude to go to AA if you aren’t totally dependent, but it is affecting you adversely?

4 years sober today. So much to reflect on, not least of which how important it is to “get comfortable getting uncomfortable”. In my experience, it’s truly the only way forward.
