If it's not a posting or employer that offers remote work, I can't say I'd blame an employer for putting an out-of-towner lower on the candidate list.
Looking at it from the applicant side, this is where a good cover letter is important - you can explain up front you are seeking remote work or that you are interested in relocating. Theoretically an employer will find that kind of information valuable, particularly if you have relevant work experience.
I’m looking at roles in FL. Not many require cover letters anymore.
Given the rise in remote positions, I don’t think it’s as prevalent as it used to be but it’s definitely something that happens - especially if you have firms listed that are from a differing state on your résumé. I’ve had that asked of me when I transitioned from NY/NJ/CT/PA to Texas - all I said was that I was looking for a more local position rather than remote.
Online, through Indeed, ZipRecruiter, and other websites. Look at your local bar association or other legal associations and see if they have a job board.
We have homes in NJ and VA. We wanted to move to VA permanently so I began applying for positions. After many applications I had one interview with a firm out of Richmond. Our home is in Western Loudoun County outside of DC. Richmond is about two hours away 🤦♀️
