I don't understand the system either lol. I've been working 50 hour weeks steadily and take 2 weeks vacation and now I'm underutilized.
Yes, it was just to make clear what D1 would need to be doing to be “steadily” working those hours and not experience a dip.
I suspect D1 didn’t start at 100%
Yes PTO reduces your utilization. I took 4 weeks last year plus all of the holidays and was a few percentage points above my util target. Never billed more than 45 and no issues. Got a 1 last YE as well
The denominator is the same regardless of if you are staffed, on PTO, or there’s a public holiday (I believe exceptions like military service do apply, I’m not too familiar with that policy), and is based on a 40-hour work week (for a normal year, 52 weeks * 40 hrs/wk = 2080 hrs as the denominator). That means that as a rough estimate, if you bill 45 hours each week you work, you could spend your 25 days of PTO and 15 holidays and still barely hit the 95% target for A/C (speaking from legacy Tech side). Of course, throw in any sort of bench time between projects and that figure is shot.
I’ve been with the firm for 7 years and never lost a day of pto and always hit my utilization and also been on the bench in tech.
Would be tough to spend all PTO and hit the A/C targets with any bench time if you’re only billing 45/week as you need to hit 44 weeks’ worth for 95%, leaving 8 weeks for PTO (5 weeks) as well as accounting for all the holidays you don’t bill over (3 weeks). SC and up is much more doable with roughly 12 days of buffer.
