Make manager or switch firms into a manager role before you leave
Definitely want to work to make manager level first. There is way more opportunity for your entire career with that milestone under your belt. Also realize corporate may be less overall hours but a lot of times there is also so much less flexibility which can be harder to get accustomed to.
Any ideas on what kind of jobs to look for in industry? Hoping to move away from tax but not sure what can be a possible and smooth transition.
Your best bet would be working as a tax accountant in a big corporation that has the need. But, if you want to really change up you would be a good fit at a small privately owned company at like $5m to $10m in revenue. Any bigger than that and they would expect audit experience
Sounds like you don't care about staying tax. If so, jump now. Manager title in tax won't mean much if you switch to finance since you will need to learn new things...everyone is so focused on getting that title which means nothing at the end.
I disagree- if you’re that close to making manager I’d stick it out. Having a manager title from big 4 on your resume comes with a higher salary and proves that you can manage people at a very competitive and well known company. I’ve seen managers leave and transition into roles that have a lot of finance or operations involved and not a lot of tax responsibilities.
