For those of us past 50, the search for meaningful work can feel like an uphill battle. We’re competing with younger candidates, often with the unspoken bias that experience comes with a “sell-by” date. But how does one truly know if age is the reason for not landing a job? When the pattern repeats itself—well-prepared presentations, strong interviews, and positive feedback that doesn’t convert to offers—it’s hard not to wonder if age discrimination is at play.

Try also being in the "majority". I have been told that "the last thing companies need is more old white guys."

To truthfully answer your question: Yes, you are being discriminated against because of your age. Two reasons why: (1) Your years of experience means you are worth more than the company is willing to pay for the vacant position. (2) You are not as malleable and trainable as the youngsters because you have an entire lifetime of "bad habits" to unlearn. A possible No. 3 would be that the company thinks it will only get another 10-15 years out of you. This isn't as likely as it was in the past because most of these young kids will leave for greener pastures or less demanding positions in three years. Bad news is, you can't prove ageism unless they come right out and confess. It's too easy to say "So many applicants, only one job) and let the math hide their decision-making criteria.

We will never really know. Thankfully , my current job has mostly older and experienced folks so it worked well for me

I don't doubt that age discrimination is rampant in business. But the problem is that there's no way to prove it. In some cases, it's just an unconscious bias. But no matter how it manifests, no one is going to admit it, and no one is going to put it in writing where it could be proven. It's just a lousy situation, you're at a disadvantage but there's really no way to substantiate it or act against it.

Here's a thought. Remove any older experience that puts you beyond 15 to 25 years of work. Make sure your education (tech schools or college) years are compatible to your new "age" bracket, so either between jobs or just before your "first" job. Do not put high school graduation year if you can avoid it. Make it extremely difficult for companies to determine your age based on your resume. Better yet, make 'em assume you're seasoned but not older than 40 ish years. I bet you'll get more follow up interviews than you do now. And don't hesitate to color your hair, hide some grays, or workout and look younger than they think. Companies cannot ask your age. So don't give it away.

I felt this OP. I am almost 60 and have experienced ageism several times in the past year when applying for jobs. Its really sad that I have so much experience and yet can't seem to find anything because they are hiring these younger candidates.

I had a crush on a girl. It's been almost 2 years since I confessed my feelings to her and today she told me that she likes me too.
The only issue is she's a Muslim and I'm a Hindu. She believes we don't have a future and that's why she took a long time to confess. She is confused on what to do and even I am confused because things will actually be difficult for obvious reasons.
Please advice on what we should do now.
