Start with your insurance website’s provider directory- if you’re choosing an OB, it’s great to start by narrowing the field to providers covered by your insurance! This holds true for the birthing center/hospital of your choice as well- but if you search by “OB” or “maternal care” you should get an idea of what hospital systems or OB groups are covered, and that’s a huge first step. From there, look for the type of dr you want (younger/older, male/female, etc.) and factor in where their office is (remember, you’ll likely be going to a doctor’s office for routine visits, but you might have to go to the hospital for things like ultrasounds, if your OB doesn’t have an ultrasound machine in their office. And then once you get closer to your due date, you’ll be going in to the OB’s office more frequently, and also you’ll go in a few times after you give birth). So proximity might be important, or access via public transportation, or good parking- whatever matters for you.
You can weigh all these things out from the list of providers covered by your insurance, and then see who is accepting new patients! For me, I was recommended one OB, but she wasn’t accepting new patients, so I went with another OB in her same practice, and I loved her and she was so great for me. If you want to post here what geographic area you’re in, people may also be able to suggest OBs they like!
Anyway, congratulations!!!
Thank you so much! I’ll definitely start where you recommended and go from there! I’m in the New York area! Would prefer doctors in Long Island/queens but Manhattan works too
Congratulations! This was me last year - I started by picking a hospital I wanted to give birth at. Then I looked up OBs that deliver at that hospital and picked one that was covered by my insurance/had good reviews. Some OBs have “Meet the Doctors” zoom sessions where you can meet them and they answer FAQs.
What city are you in??
Definitely check your insurance.
But what kind of care do you want? Personal? Basic?
We opted for a birthing center which was NOT covered by UH. We wanted personalized care, 30-1hr appointments and planned for a natural birth.
When you go to your appointments ask the following:
- can you guarantee to be at my birth? If not, who will be?
- are you on call 24/7?
- what’s your emergency c - section %?
- Which hospitals do you work with?
Good luck!!
Join the Facebook moms group in your city or town and search for OB recommendations. It’s asked constantly. That’s how I found my OBs.
It would probably helpful to know what things you’re particular about - eg my second and third were delivered with nurse midwives because I wanted hospital births but did not like OB-care in my first pregnancy.
What are you particular about? I’d join a local Facebook mom group and ask questions look for recommendation in there that fit your requirements.
