As long as you have about 2-3 months of payment, I think you’ll be fine. Think of this as an extended PTO. Hiring will be again be heavy once this thing passes in 2-3 months...
I disagree with Newco. I believe that is foolish advice. The future has never been so uncertain and I highly doubt that kind of quick recovery, so do economists.
You just learned that the best laid plans can go awry. I've been unemployed more than my fair share and the thing to do is do the best you can. Set a routine and stick to it. Ensure you are setting yourself up for success as much as possible. It's sometimes exhausting, defeating, hopeless even, but I assure you are stronger than these times, as long as you keep pressing forward. You are your first, best, and last defense and you have to approach each day as this. You are going to find out alot about yourself and exactly what you're made of.
Do not expect to have a job until you sign your name on that employment contract. Do not rest on the expectation that you'll be back in the same sort of job or lifestyle in 2-3 months. The reality is that you may never get back here, but that's not a bad thing. This could have been the best turn of events to ever happen to you. That part is up to you.
It's your job now to prove to yourself that you can make it.
Now dig in, have your wits about you and do not lose your spirit.
Remember you heart is the size of your fist. Keep fighting.
I appreciate both responses. I'm actually a worst case scenario guy, so I am preparing for a long job hunt.
Go file unemployment rn
Not necessarily. Benefits probably won’t start until then but you can minimize the gap
Give yourself 2 days to grieve. Eat ice-cream or do whatever else is needed. Get ahead of your finances. Budget how many months severance plus savings. Apply for unemployment, if necessary. If you need to drop an expensive apartment, drop it. Very painful but do this. Then set a routine, and start reaching out to your target firms.
I try to keep 8-12 months of emergency saved. I like getting laid off - it’s a chance to work more on things you’re interested in for a time while you regroup
I'm the same. I've saved up enough to last throughout my lease but unfortunately I haven't been working long enough to save up this much. Thankfully, I can move back home if I need to.
Sorry to hear that. I’ve been there and it sucks (likely to be there again soon). Took me about a week to get over the lay-off portion. Just try to stay busy and keep a routine.
Plus, luckily for you, you’re going to get ~$4,000 a month in unemployment. This amount should be plenty to cover expenses until something else comes up.
If you don’t mind telling, what firm?
