Has anyone ever put together a formal case for a raise (like a document with market data, accomplishments, impact numbers) and actually had it work? I'm thinking about doing this but I don't want to come across as demanding or out of touch.

No I haven’t, and I don’t think your method is typically effective

For me, I’ve simply gone out and got an offer to join a competitor. Shoe that to your employer, and if they want to keep you they’ll pay up. Worked like a charm for me. Twice (different employers). And the pay bumps were both near-immediate (next paychecks were pro-rated).

But each time, I knew I had leverage! And even still, I was prepared to jump ship if necessary!

Good luck

This seems like a good strategy on paper but it hardly moves the needle until you have another real offer to fall back on. Director2 is right.

I've done this and it worked. The whole pitch was basically what's in it for them if they gave me the raise. I framed it as: here's the value I'm bringing now and what I want to do for the agency next. I aligned it to their leadership priorities, too. My doc had impact metrics of recent past work and showed my influence throughout the agency. I used the doc as a visual during the meeting, leave behind after.

Good luck!

Agree with above. I’ve done the same. Keep track of your wins whether that be incremental income you proactively drove and brought in, or a note from a client (or your other business partners) acknowledging your effort and impact, or the like. It can be a friendly reminder to management about what you bring to the table. Add to that an idea or two about how you’d like to grow the business going forward and you’ll have active listeners.

Hello I’m curious on how to bring this to my supervisor attention. A few months back all the techs got a raise based on how long they have had been a tech. A coworker and I Both have been a tech for the same amount of years but she got 1.50 more than I did. How do I bring this up as the supervisor mentioned that we shouldn’t be talking about our raises.

Currently 25 years old.
Goals:
* Own a home in a HCOL
* 2 kids (eventually)
* Retire at 50 on $125k/year.

Envelope math:
* $125k/year would require an investment portfolio of ~$3M.
* Targeting a $2M home (split with partner)
* 2 kids - $1M to raise both (including college fund, split with partner)
* $500K buffer for unexpected expenses
* 33% tax

Therefore, 6.5-7M retirement savings needed. To hit this (assuming 6% return after inflation), I’d need to save ~$110k/year.

How does this sound?

Right so here’s a bit of a dilemma I work to a much higher standard at home and it’s this high standard that means I’m in line for a promotion. I’ve grown so much and I feel really strong in my role I’m also busier than ever. The problem is we’re going back into the office and I don’t want to go in if it’s just going to be senior management in asking me to get them lunches for client meetings or fetch a glass of water and cutlery for meeting rooms. Definitely not ready to go back to that….

Hi all! I work at a nonprofit and am looking to leave the organization. As I browse available positions in my area, I’m realizing there is a LOT of crossover between my current org and others, for example shared board members, folks who are on our board and employed at one of the institutions I’m interested in, etc.. Is there a way to say “my current org doesn’t know I’m looking, so please treat my interest with discretion” that doesn’t raise red flags? Thanks!

Hi Fishes,
I am an Senior iOS developer. YOE is 8.5. Currently getting 13 LPA. Getting promotion in a month with 25 to 30 percent hike which comes nearly 16.8 LPA. I cannot able to relocate now due to family dependency reasons. I heard iOS developer salary market is good. I am having a very good work life balance in the current company. I am in a confusion. Should I look for opportunities with PWFM or stay in current company? Am I making low pay as per market trends?

Seeking advice: I am a young sales consultant and sales engineer working for a tech startup company. I have 6 years of sales experience. And I have been helping run my family business for the past 10 years. I was intially interviewed for a senior account executive position at a $70k offer. Instead they told me I needed more training and hired me as a Junior account executive at a $50k salary + commission. Today is my 6th month mark and I have done very well. And no talks of a promotion / raise..

I got a promotion a year and 3 months ago, and got a pay raise 5 months ago. Could I still ask for a promotion to SAE if I have been supporting a team more as one? Promotions are hard to stab with.

I’ve worked as assistant manager for years, but it doesn’t look like I’ll be getting a promotion anytime soon. I feel bad leaving since I'm kind of the glue around here and I’ve gotten to know pretty much everyone. Any advice?
