Love Barry's! I haven't done Orange Theory but heard they have rowing + heart rate monitors? Barry's is just treadmill and floor/weight intervals.
Booz- the app is called “OT beat”. Top right corner is a button for Out of Studio Workout. It connects via Bluetooth. It also logs all your OT classes as well so you can see all your performance summaries together
I personally like Barry’s better bc I’m not a fan of rowing. Also the switches at OT are so quick. I like doing a set a little longer so I can get into my rhythm
I’ve been going to Barry’s for about 2 years and recently started going to Orangetheory at my client site where there is no Barry’s. IMO, Orangetheory is the poor man’s Barry’s. Similar type of HIIT workout. Orangetheory has three rotations (treadmill, rowing, weights) while Barry’s is treadmill and weights only. I feel that the weights rotations at Barry’s are more dynamic than OT. I also like the treadmill rotations at Barry’s more because they’re more varied in their intervals (quicker switches between sprinting, running, and incline) where OT makes you run for longer periods without switching which gets boring. I do like that OT makes you wear a heart monitor so I can keep track of my stats, so now I also wear it to my Barry’s classes (the app works outside of OT)
EY1 - tangent; when you wear you OTB band to a Barry’s class, what app are you using to pull the data from the OTB band? Help much appreciated as I’d love to use the OTB band outside of OrangeTheory.
OP - I have never been to Barry’s, but really like OrangeTheory for several reasons... first, the live data feed that helps me to push myself more and is just a short glance away on a giant screen; second, the amount of sessions available which gives me flexibility to make a workout happen almost every day; Third - number of locations. I have worked out in Honolulu, Manhattan, LA, DC, and Harrisonburg,VA ;) plus my home gym. Haven’t had a problem doing it and haven’t had a bad coach yet.
In general I think to get the most out of any of these types of group HIT sessions, you have to do two things... make sure you are using the correct form, and push push push move move move to make sure you aren’t just checking a box but are actually working out.
You can also use MapMyFitness which may have you more data points then OT Beat
I am a huge fan of Barry’s! It is a bit more of a lifestyle fitness choice (see and be seen, expensive gear, smoothie bar, etc.) but the workouts themselves are incredible and the instructors are great!
Ive been to both. I find OT the best - better change in workouts, more down the earth, good composition. Barry's is pretentious, they charge for every little thing and is more a "lifestyle" Brand. The workouts are also a little monotonous and uninspiring. That said, ymmv. I'm going to stick to orange theory. Btw, been to Barry's in Chelsea and OT in nyc midtown and Atlanta
See and be seen at Barry's. You can get the same results doing Beachbody workouts at home (Insanity, P90x, etc.)
What type of Heart Rate Monitor do you use?
