this a poor experiment to conduct and then use its outcome to decide on your future
I agree 100%. Planning is key
I'm about to shift gears after years in software development and in management consulting to merge these topic areas with my experience in aviation to lead initiatives that marry all my experiences together. Strictly speaking, not a career shift so much as an evolution. While I lay the groundwork, I will stay where I am in case it doesn't pan out, but seeing others before me change careers abruptly without proper planning and due diligence is folly IMO, at this stage of our careers, unless we are independently wealthy, aren't risking our future and could alternatively just retire.
I never take a job without also prepping for the worst. Even if I am happy, I am always looking and formulate a multi-layered exit strategy that I adjust on an ongoing basis. I have long ago ceased to believe any job is forever, or trust anyone I call "boss". I know this sounds very cynical but it has served me well. Even if my primary exit doesn't pan out, the secondary is also in flight and will turn into a side hustle if the primary succeeds.
I’ve seen industry people move to consulting, typically for a sales exec role. Higher comp but typically doesn’t stay long (and I typically advise against it). Then again, consulting is not for everyone even if you are an expert in the area. I’ve see people to reverse, but typically at a younger age and they seem to do well.
Having said above, I am also thinking about it since the risk is much lower now (house paid for, kids grown, retirement saving, although modest, is enough).
Op: what kind of regrets did you hear?
Ya. Large consulting firms pay more and they do work you. No doubt you also sign up for more pressure and stress. It will be a lifestyle change, no doubt. But bigger firm also provides more opportunities. Not a bad idea.
